Server Sleep Stops Client Playback
« on: November 10, 2013, 06:08:43 pm »

For some time now when we play music on a Win 7 Client from our Win7 server the server will go to sleep. Both have identical latest versions of MC19.

I found this in searching for the problem:

18.0.125 (1/28/2013)
8. NEW: The computer will not be allowed to sleep while serving media or ripping discs.

Could this be an MC bug? I don't find any settings to control this behavior.

Thanks,
Rod

It sounds like a bug if it's sleeping while you play music.  Has anyone else noticed this?  I can test this later tonight.

Are the files actually being served by MC, or do you use UNC/mapped filenames so the client can get them directly?

Hi Adam & Matt,

Thanks for responding. I have your Media Server set to serve. I have to log into MC from the Client for the Client to play the files. I haven't done any kind of mapping, but don't totally understand your question.

Cheers,

What's the filename column show on the client?  Is it a filename that might work directly from the client (in Explorer, a word processor, etc.)?

And can your client get to files on J:\?

To test, type J:\ into the Window run box and see if Explorer pops up and shows files.

No. Error that says refers to a location that is unavailable.

Thanks for pursuing this.

How long is the server's sleep timeout?

Do you have memory playback enabled on the client?

If you look at 'Media Network' on the server, does it show that it's actively serving a large media file as you're playing on the client?

Sorry for all the questions.  I'm just trying to get my head around what might be happening.

Sleep timeout had been 45 minutes. When I started troubleshooting this problem I lowered it to 10 min. where it still is.

I don't have Memory Playback enabled on server or clients.

Where do you want me to look for 'Media Network' on the Server to determine size it's serving?

Thanks a lot for pursuing this Matt. No problem for mucho questions - the only way to get to the bottom of it.

Cheers,
Rod
