Impressed by JRiver's CPU usage
« on: November 20, 2013, 03:23:41 pm »

So I was testing a new CPU cooling set up in my HTPC last night and wanted to torture test the CPU and see what kind of temperatures I'd get.  So I started up Prime95, and, as expected CPU utilization immediately jumps to 100% on all cores and stays pinned between 99% and 100%.  I let it run for about fifteen minutes before I noticed something funny:  I'd left music playing in JRiver without thinking of it and it had been playing flawlessly all that time despite pinned out CPU usage.  With convolution engaged no less!

What snapped me back into focus was a single soft drop out in the music after fifteen minutes or so (by which time my poor CPU was at 70 degrees Celsius, and I broke off testing to improve the cooler setup).  Which is pretty darned impressive as far as I'm concerned.

I just wanted to congratulate the team at JRiver for making software with a small enough CPU footprint that it can run happily alongside Prime95 until the CPU is hot enough to cook an egg on!  That has not been my experience with other media players I have used.

Yeh, its pretty cool. I had noticed that as well. Disk activity seems to have a much bigger impact on playback stability than cpu load.

Anyways, if you like to take your torture test to the next level, read on.

Dunno why there are 2 topics in the wiki about stability, I suppose they can be merged (JimH?).

Thanks for that; I'm just finishing up a major system refit and that will be very helpful.  I've been screwing around with PCs since the early 90's, but I just learned some new things :-)
