Finally. That's been a long standing wish for many Google users.

I moved away from Google a long time ago and have been hosting my own domain with email for some time now. Just now I am moving away from my hosting provider to another one and was looking for ways to easily move my mailboxes from the old server to the new one.

I created a new mailbox on the new server, made a backup of my account, downloaded the file to my pc and extracted it to see what it looked like. Turns out their folder structure is very similar and the individual mail stores are compatible. I just need to rename the files and some folders, create a tar file and upload it which I can restore on the new server. Already tested it with a dummy mailbox and it works :).

I left Google Apps and am now with FastMail (fastmail.fm).  They are great.  Once your account is setup, you can have it auto-migrate your Google IMAP mailboxes.  Works very well.
