Possible to add Opus support ?
« on: December 07, 2013, 07:22:14 pm »

I have been experimenting with the Opus codec on some of my audiobook's to reduce file size while still enjoying good sound quality of the resultant files. Is there a way to add this codec to MC ?

LAV supports Opus, so (assuming it doesn't work currently) it should be easy to add support to MC, considering that LAV is used extensively in MC (and, you know, Hendrik works for JRiver).

That said, I don't think using Opus for a stored media file format makes any kind of sense.  That's not what it is for.  The primary design goal of Opus is for low-latency realtime streaming and communication (things like VOIP and live streaming).

Opus is a good codec, it can serve both the speech real-time use, and replace many of the lossy audio codecs. It seems to work better then AAC in many cases for stereo audio, and I think its something to watch out for in the future.

Anyhow, somehow i though Opus was supported already, I'll look into it.

That's cool.  I really didn't know much of anything about the codec (just a vague recollection that it was designed for low latency - VOIP and stuff like that).

Next Version:
NEW: Added support for Opus audio files in JRiver audio engine (using DirectShow filters).
