Media Center freezes Music Streamer HD [Solved]
« on: January 25, 2016, 10:03:32 am »

When Media Center v. 21 switches to playing an internet radio station on Connected Media, the Music Streamer HD DAC freezes and the PC must be shut down to reset the USB device. This happens after playing a music file in the Audio module with the media player. After stopping the sound clip and selecting a Connected Media radio station, a burst of static noise is heard, then the DAC freezes.

The PC must be shut down and restarted to reset the DAC; restarting alone will not clear the USB device. The Music Streamer HD is an upgrade from a MS II+, and the problem did not occur previously. The firmware is v. 1.4. Also, the Playback Devices menu in the system tray shows the volume level for all attached audio devices frozen at maximum level.

The MC has been configured to select the DAC device, with mostly defaults for the other settings. Is there a solution? I would like to purchase a license because the sound is better than Windows 10 apps on the x64 HTPC machine with an MSI Z97 Gaming 3 mainboard. Thanks

Installing the upgrade v. 21.0.39 corrected the problem. The previous was v. 21.0.2x.

Correction, the problem returned after restarting the computer once the upgrade was installed. The DAC still freezes and a burst of static noise is heard when switching from the media player to the Connected Media module under Audio.

The Audio Device is set to “Music Streamer HD [WASAPI]".

When it happens, try powering the DAC off and back on, without changing anything on the PC side.

The DAC may be having trouble switching sample rates.  Try using MC's DSP output settings to force everything to the same sample rate.

Unplugging the USB input to the MS HD and putting it back corrects the problem. Trying to force the DAC to match the bit sampling settings of the MC was not successful.

On the DSP Studio tab selecting None for Output Encoding and putting the Sampling Rates at No Change“ did not make a difference.

Then selecting “DSD in DoP format” gave the error message, “Playback could not be started on the WASAPI using the format 44.1kHz 2ch. The output format may not be supported by your hardware.” Selecting “1xDSD in native format” gave the same error message.

Are any other settings possible to force the MC to match the sampling rate of the DAC?

After reaching technical support for Music Streamer, the USB audio 2.0 driver was installed and the problem was solved.
