100% CPU when saving Tag changes (MC19.0.104)
« on: January 22, 2014, 09:18:15 am »

Whenever I save tag changes to my library the CPU maxes out at 100% and it seems to take almost a minute for each change to be saved.

I'm running 19.0.104 on a Dedicated Windows 7 VM with 2GB Ram (only about 670MB in use) and a 3.40 Ghz i5 CPU so no shortage of horsepower.

The media library is stored in the VMs disk (16GB Free)

All this is hosted on a Windows 2012 R2 server (again loads of resources) which is where all the music is stored on a couple of mirrored physical disks. The 2012 OS is on an SSD though the VM is on the Hard disks.

The library has 93K tracks on it though I never used to have a problem with this amount of music before.

I can't find any reason why a tag change burns so much CPU, if I manually move files around and use tools to change the tags they are instantaneous, it seems only to be a problem in MC.

Any ideas?

Read through this guide:
http://wiki.jriver.com/index.php/Media_Center_Troubleshooting_Guide

Particularly the sections on:
http://wiki.jriver.com/index.php/Media_Center_Troubleshooting_Guide#Check_Your_Anti-Virus_or_Security_Software
http://wiki.jriver.com/index.php/Media_Center_Troubleshooting_Guide#Disks_and_Locations

I run MC in a few different VMs, without issue.  In cases where I've seen issues saving tags similar to what you're describing, it is usually due to latency from an Anti-Virus application (interfering with database access), or filesystem issues (either needing chkdsk or permissions issues on the disk).  The issues could be either with the media files themselves, or with MC's Library files.

If this is in a corporate environment and you're unable to uninstall the security software for testing purposes, follow the guides here:

The apple file format m4a takes forever to update...  Flac and mp3 format tags are very fast.... (I trans-code to a different container to speed this up)
