MPO Support?
« on: July 20, 2014, 04:58:27 am »

I'd got a few MPO files previously - from a Nintendo 3DS, I think! But have recently got a 3D lens for my DSLR.

My NAS DLNA server doesn't recognise them - I can rename them to .jpg and it then pulls out the first image, but then devices just don't render them as 3D.

I thought I'd see how MC handles it, and was surprised to find that it just failed to import them altogether. I can't open them directly either - I get "Playback failed - The media types of the selected files are not supported for playback. (<none>)"

Interestingly there was this post a few years ago:

http://yabb.jriver.com/interact/index.php?topic=66869.0

which suggests that at one point MC was able to handle them to some extent.
Did the support get removed due to the lack of interest back then, perhaps?

Thanks

I'm not familiar with MPO files.  I don't think we've done anything to support them.

They're basically multiple JPGs in one file, with the EXIF pointing at each one. They're used (though not exclusively) for 3D. As far as I can tell, there are usually 4 images for 3D, left and right, with thumbnails of each.

I'm confused though - the link I pointed to suggested that they were importable in 17.x - but 19.x just doesn't even 'see' them. Doesn't that mean they WERE 'supported' to some extent back then? Or just that the import process was a lot 'looser'?

I take that back.  They're supported.  I just tried.  It shows the first image of the set.

Any ideas why I can't open them, or get them to import?

Hm, just tried telling it to import more file types - such as data, "other"... and the results were slightly different (is it normal that it lists two files as imported then those same files as updated as well?):

Library now has 53535 files. Search and update took 0:37.

Imported 2 new files.
Updated 2 files that had external changes.
Failed to import 2 files.
Skipped 42 files (previously determined to be bad).

All of these MPOs came from the same camera - in fact taken pretty much at the same time.

And weirdly, the two that it says it failed to import were there before - the ones it said it had previously determined to be bad where from when I tried to import all of those files earlier today!

Actually, I've noticed in File Types in options they are listed as 3D JPEG under images - maybe there is just something it's not so happy about with the contents, dunno... (certainly fits with not being able to open them from the "open media file" option).

In fact even the ones that are now imported still won't actually play in MC, and it's pulling out none of the tags. In fact, hovering over it just says "unknown album - unknown name". And the info panel says "UNKNOWN FILE TYPE - Unknown Duration"

Could you send me one of the files that doesn't import?   For example: P:\Mobile upload\Rob\20140713_144208.mpo

I'm matt at jriver dot com.  Thanks.

Thanks for the sample.

Next build will have improved MPO handling.

Cheers.
