That is crazy that I can't switch licenses!!!  I just paid for 8.0 a couple of weeks ago, not knowing that the Beta version was not working properly, now you say "sorry, I can't switch?".  So I just lost my $$$?? I have never heard of a business practice like that.

8.0 is getting better every day. In about a month, 8.0 should be bug free. In the mean time, 7.2 will run that long and then switch.

Can't quarrel with the result, but must say the tone of the response is rather off-putting. She's a customer and she's entitled to a polite explanation. She obviously didn't know what she was getting into. If she made an error, there's a better way to point it out than just blowing her off.

I wouldn't spend a lot of time trying to figure out how MJ can conquer the universe if it can't respond civilly to its consumers, however mistaken they may be.

I can see both sides of this...

1. If I buy a product, bring it home, and find out that it doesn't work as expected, I can return it. Sometimes for cash, sometimes for store credit, sometimes for a different model.

2. But we're not talking about a CD player, where I can bring it back to you and you know that I have in fact returned it. We're talking about a piece of software (the RRG file) that is easily copied as many times as I see fit. So who's to say that I've REALLY returned it. How can I prove that I haven't made any copies? Even though I may only want an older version, there's no way to prove that what I didn't end up with was a copy of both. Of course why I would want to do that (or why Stacy would) is beyond me, but, there you have it.

The solution to me would seem to be that each version of MJ should accept a license from any newer version. If a person wants to upgrade, they still have to pay, but if they buy a current license, they can then use whatever earlier version they want. After all, it's pretty safe to say that once 8 is officially released, 7 will cease to generate any revenue for JRiver, so it's not like they would lose any money by allowing this.

Of course that doesn't help anything NOW. All of the previous versions are done. And unless JRiver wants to go ahead and start retrofitting all of the old versions of MJ to do this, then there's really nothing that can be done. It could be something to do in the future though.

Doof

look at this

Stacy has a mj8 license saved to disk

so give her a 7.2 license, she can upgrade to 8 later if she wants.

so if j river sent her a 7 license, and she has a 8 license saved to floppy that is never returned what then?

just because i buy windows XP does that give me the right to also have windows 2000, windows me, windows 98se, windows 98, windows 95, windows 3.1 etc...

I think not

>>And unless JRiver wants to go ahead and start retrofitting all of the old versions
well maybe not all but maybe if a user buys a 8 license in beta it maybe should work on MJ7, MJ8, & MJ9

JimH posted one, you may have missed it

you don't know that, unless you know her

"Let the buyer beware."

Unless I missed it I don't know what Stacy's problem is with MJ8. It is buggy but I wouldn't go back to 7.

Harry the Hipster
> she's entitled to a polite explanation.

Stacy bought 8.0  She had a chance to try it for 30 days to see if it worked.  Maybe she tried it.

She didn't like it, had her friend/relative help her revert to 7.2.  Then she discovered that wouldn't work with her license.

Now she wants a license for what she has.  Reasonable, but not possible.  We can't do it.

There is also the question of just how much time (money) we spend on any given individual.  Assuming we those we help here have purchased, we net about $20.  JRiver's cost on its technical people is more than $1/minute.

Suppose we just decide, "OK, Stacy.  The customer is always right."  To refund her money will cost about $20.  You might argue that it is a good investment in public relations.  I agree.  IF she could return the goods, but she can't.  She can tell us she will remove her license.

Again, she had 30 days to decide.  She chose to buy.  Now it's our problem?

Stacy, I'm going to close this.  If you want to post again, please use a subject that describes the problem.
