MC19 stops playing music (flac, sacd-iso, sacd-sdf)
« on: April 21, 2014, 02:01:54 pm »

I installed JRiver19 on a new Windows 8.1 HTPC (Intel Core i3-4130T processor). I'm confronted now with the problem that music stops playing (JRiver hangs). In the beginning I was thinking that it had to do with the sacd files I'm playing (sacd-iso) but I encountered the same problem with smaller sacd-sdf files and also with 2-channel flac files. My music files are stored on a Synology NAS.
I have included a log file. The log file was registrating during playing a flac-file starting April 21, 5:51 pm. JRiver stops playing at April 21, 6:08 pm.
Only Windows anti virus software was running (I removed other AV software from my system).
Can you indicate what can be the reason of this problem?

I'm sure someone will have a look at your log file and tell you what went wrong.

Meanwhile, you could go over this excellent Troubleshooting Guide, specifically the part that deals with Disks and Locations. It links to Network troubleshooting as well.

While you could skip to the end, I would advise to at least skim over the entire guide.

If you have any questions don't hesitate to ask.

It looks like something in the Windows Audio crashed, I would suggest to update audio drivers, if you haven't done so already.

Which audio output are you using in MC? (in Options -> Audio -> Audio Device)

I shall explain more of my setup:
The Intel Core i3-4130 processor is installed on a motherboard containing a Realtek ALC887 soundchip. Video and sound are transported via HDMI to a Denon AVR receiver and from the Denon receiver via HDMI to a Sony television.
In the Windows device list are present:
Under audio input/output: two drivers
* Denon AVRHD Intel (R) Display Audio;
* Realtek HDMI Output (Realtek High Definition Audio.
Under sound/video/games control are present:
* Intel (R) Display Audio;
+ Realtek HD Audio.

After your message I was inspecting again the Audio device configuration in JRiver. The audio device is set on Denon -AVRHD Intel (R) Display Audio WASAPI. I just tried to increase the buffertime from 100 ms to 250 ms but then the MC crashes.
I just tested again the system: music stops playing after about 15 minutes.

I identified a possible problem that may account for what you are seeing, but I'm not entirely sure, since I can't reproduce the problem directly.
The change to fix this problem will be in 19.0.130 and newer, so if we don't find anything else, please try again once its available (probably within a couple days).

I own a Denon AVR as well, but I don't use it for music on WASAPI. I'll test it tonight.

I just did a test by playing some sacd-sdf files from the hard disc (and not from the NAS).
But the same problem occurs: playing stops after about 10-15 minutes (not on the same place in the music-file).
My conclusion is: the network is less suspicious.

I configured a zone with Wasapi to the Denon AVR-4306 (HDMI connection). I can play music just fine (just finished an entire album).

I think you may need to wait for Hendrik's fix and try that.

Hendrik you advised me to install a new version of MC.
So I did. I just installed version 19.0.131.
After rebooting I carried out a test again. Music was playing from the hard disc drive.
Same problem: music stops playing after about 10 minutes.
I included the log file

Unlike before, there is nothing in the log that would indicate anything at all. It starts playback like its supposed to, the third track of some album, apparently, everything looks fine, and thats where the log ends.

What does MC do or say when the playback stopped?
In the Info bar in the top where it usually shows the current position and the duration, and some other info - does it say anything there? Does it still count up the seconds?

I was just trying to make a new log file.
After about 15 minutes music stopped playing. Simultanously the screen of my TV went to black.
I moved the mouse, then due to that action the screen lighted up again and the music started playing on the position where it stopped before!
Does it has to do something with PC-sleeping phenomena??

If you're using HDMI for audio, it may require the screen to remain on, otherwise audio playback my fail as the HDMI link is being turned off when the screen turns off.
There is an option in MC under Options -> Audio -> Disable display from turning off, which can help in such situations by keeping the screen on during audio playback.

Oke I checked the box in front of "Disable display from turning off".
It is clear that these phenomena are causing the problems.
But most of the time I'm listening to music without TV-screen on. What happens in that situation?

HDMI is a bit tricky. If the screen was already off, it may just work, but if it was on at first and then turns off later, it would break the connection.
Sadly HDMI is designed primarily for video, audio-only is not one of its strong-suits.

When I used HDMI for audio only, I could turn off the TV during playback. The Denon would click and interrupted audio for a second or two and then it would click again and audio was back on.

Your model may handle it differently I don't know.

I just played a whole album without problems.
I will leave the checkbox "Disable display from turning off" checked.
I think I can manage the problem now.
Thank you for your assistence and advices.
