How to get get good quality video rips at a reasonable size
« on: April 04, 2014, 08:23:09 am »

I've been trying to get an uploadable rip of a video from a dvd. It's 52 minutes long but the 2 rips I've tried from MC have been around the 2-2.5GB mark, which isn't really workable (I tried both the 720 avi and h264 settings).

This is just a home video, so no-one wants to spend ages waiting for it to download, but it's a rugby game, so the resolution needs to be reasonably high to be able to see what's going on.

From other rips from dvd that I've seen, it should be possible to get it down to about 500MB, but I've never been able to discover what software can do that (I try to figure it out every year or so, but there's such a mess of rubbish when you start looking for video conversion/ripping software that I lose the will very quickly!).

Do you have any suggestions for how to achieve what I want?

If you want to convert in MC, I would recommend the "MP4 480p AUTOFPS" conversion target, it should be in the area of 500-600mb for 52 minutes, and quite appropriate for a DVD source.

Hi Hendrik - thanks, that's really good!  :)

I noticed an "Audio" section under Options for converting, but no actual options. Is that something that will be coming to MC - the ability to change the audio encoding for videos?

I would love to be able to make the conversion profiles more flexible to allow different video/audio settings, so the entire setup of the dialog may change in the future, but probably not too soon.

Every Time I Tried To Rip With MC, TV Shows From A DVD It Would Not Rip Them Properly.

I think it only ripped the first show, It has been some time since I tried it (Using MC19).

I don't normally buy movies, I do Buy TV shows On DVD.

Yes, it would be useful to be able to reduce the audio encoding quality for files where it's not that important compared to file size, such as match-spectators screaming from the sidelines!

What is the audio encoding of MP4 480p AUTOFPS setting?
