What is the actual advantage to integer mode?
« on: April 29, 2014, 01:48:09 am »

Is there an actual advantage to using integer mode in MC? The processing internally in MC is probably 32-bit floating point numbers, as it is in CoreAudio. So if this is given to CoreAudio, it will convert the float to 24-bit integer format for the DAC.

Perhaps in integer mode the conversion is done by MC before CoreAudio gets the number. But the conversion between 32-bit floats and 24-bit integers is simple straightforward operation and lossless. So what is the difference if MC or CoreAudio does the conversion? It seems that you would end up with the same result. The only advantage that I can think of is where unnecessary dithering takes place/ This is where the quality of this operation can differ between MC and CoreAudio.

Any thoughts on this? Anyone?

Personally I don't think there's an audible difference between the two, however some people prefer using integer mode for their setups.  JRiver's internal audio engine is all 64 bit.
