How to Create New Stock Rules for Smartlists
« on: May 09, 2014, 07:21:57 pm »

I love Smartlists and mostly use them rather than any other method of selection. However, I'd like to create a "default" smartlist that includes the rules I use in every one of my Smartlists. The Add Stock Rule has a number of useful rules, but I'd like to add my own. Is there a way to create your own Smartlist Template?

FYI, I want to add rules to ignore Christmas music (ie genre or album) and I want to sort by bitrate first and then remove duplicate names. This would make sure I keep the highest bitrate from duplicates.

Thanks

Create a Smartlist that defines your "template".

In all your other lists, add a rule "Playlists is any <your smartlist template>".

Sorry, I should have mentioned this other approach too...

Create your Template Smartlist.  And then, just copy it by dragging it to the top of the folder group, and select Copy when the Copy / Move menu appears.

The first method above has the advantage that you can change one list and all the others "inherit" the changes.

Yes.  Both are valid mechanisms.

Be a little careful referencing one Smartlist against another, however.  I've seen these get broken when the Playlist ID (the internal means that MC uses to do this) changes for reasons I don't fully understand.  Not usually, but I have seen them break before.

Perfect, thanks.

Using the template playlist as one of my rules is pretty smart, and I get the point that it may be problematic. I'm going to use the Copy/Rename method as suggested.

Great program

MrC you're brilliant.  This should be your Tip of the Week.  I've often thought it would be nice to save your own Stock Rules as a Preset.  What a simple and effective solution--I wish I would have thought of it a while ago.
