Advice on swapping around libraries
« on: June 20, 2014, 07:04:56 pm »

Hi

My music is on a nas. The power supply died so no nas right now.

However I have a second music collection on a local disk. In fact this is just new rips with dbpoweramp so the tagging is all good and now is the time to use this collection as my main library.

I want to move the old music library to a second library to preserve it and then (after deleting the old music library from my main library view)  import the dbpoweramp rips.

What is the best way to do this, bearing in mind the nas is not working so I can't access those files.

Thanks!

File → Library → Library Manager → Add Library

Have a look at Clone Library

I sense I don't want to stuff this up!

The steps I (think I) want to go through are

1. Save down the audio only part of current Main library (audio, video and photos in library). Is this just making a copy of Main library under a new name then deleting non audio?
2. Remove old audio part of current Main library (delete?) and import new collection to Main library

Not sure what clone is and how that's different from making a copy.

Thanks

Yep.  That's basically what you want to do.

Cloning the Library makes another complete copy in the Library Manager (stored on disk in a different location) but which contains the identical set of media files, views, and everything else.  Once Cloned, the two become completely independent.

0. Make a Library Backup in the Library Manager.  This saves the Library out, just as it is, including all settings, to a ZIP file which you can stash away.
1. Clone it over to a new Library.  Give that a name like "Old Library" or whatever.
2. Switch back to the Main library and remove whatever you want.  When you delete the files, be sure to pick the Remove Only option (it doesn't much matter if you can't access the files, but you also don't want it to even try to delete the files, so pick that option.)
