Digital Playback on Virtual CD
« on: February 11, 2002, 11:49:18 am »

Hi,

I'm using Virtual CD (4.0.4). This is a utility which enables you to create images of CD's, both data and audio, and store them in a file on the hard disk (ISO or proparity format). This means that in stead of encoding my CD's in MP3 (whatever format), I know carry the CD images on my harddisk, which is great for the quality of sound.
However, I have to configure my CD playback settings on analog. When I switch to digital, MJ simply swifts quickly along all the tracks and than finally does nothing.
Would you guys be able to take a look ? You can find Virtual CD on www.virtualcd-online.de

B.t.w. MJ 7 has the same behaviour.

Thanks in advance,

You can get exactly the same sound quality in half the space by compressing with Monkey's Audio/APE.
MJ supports APE for playback.  APE is a "lossless" encoder.

I've just downloaded version 203, and it's just the same.

Jim, I tend to disagree on you. No format is 'LoseLess' otherwise it would have been impossible to compress
Coincedently, I just did a few tests this evening. I've recorded a CD Track on WMA 192, MP3 Lame 320 and OGG 263. Not supprizing that with the headphones and the PC connected to an amplyfier that the MP3 320 comes close to the original. OGG was not bad on the whole spectrum, but it seemed that OGG loses some 'depth'.
However, I haven't tried APE yet, so that next on my list.

You might have guessed that I play classical music, which is (i.m.o.) much more sensitive on details than pop music.

Not true.  Have you ever used ZIP or RAR?  Those are lossless, but still make things smaller.

APE is the same idea, only tuned for audio.

There's more info here: http://monkeysaudio.com/theory.html

Take care.

Yes, and every time I would write a brilliant essay for english class, ZIP would tend to lose certain key bits of data (mostly the profound or sublime material)leaving me only a pedestrian work to turn in to the Ms. Jones (the professor). You just can't trust those "lossless" compression schemes, I would always tell her.
