Assigning more than one genre to a track
« on: February 10, 2002, 11:51:27 pm »

Hi Guys

Is it possible to assign more than one genre to a track.  For example some tracks I want to be able to find on two different genre like "Easy Listening" and "Rock"

Kind Regards

Sounds like a job for the Custom fields. There are 3 custom fields that can store whatever you want, and you can rename them to reflect that. Check out Settings->Options->Tree & View Settings. There should be an option there to Rename Custom Fields (may be slightly different than what I've got here if you're using 7.2) and to display them.

The only problem with that, is that in MJ8, if you do a search for |PLS|genre=[Easy Listening] MJ will only return files whose genre is JUST Easy Listening.
If you leave the end bracket off, it returns Easy Listening and Easy Listening - Rock. But then you might be messing up any rules that come after that. So you could make sure to put that rule last. But then what if you want to search for Easy Listening (and get Easy Listening - Rock) and Country (and get Country - Twang). Now you're in a mess.

Of course, using the Custom fields presents its own problem. You'd have to make sure to remember that Genre is primary genre, and Custom 1 is secondary genre and make sure to write your searches/rules accordingly. You can't willy nilly stick Rock into Genre and Easy Listening into Custom1 and then expect a search of |PLS|genre=[Easy Listening] |PLS|custom1=[Easy Listening] to return what you want. Although you could also just search for |PLS|genre=[Easy Listening],[Rock] |PLS|custom1=[Easy Listening],[Rock] and get them all that way.

Doof, you can use quotes instead of brackets.

You reported the bracket thing as a bug, but a bracket means the word HAS to either start/end with what you typed.

Like:

album="one"

Beatles - One
Aerosmit - Big Ones
Bush - Sixteen Stone

--------------------------------

album=[one]

Beatles - One

--------------------------------

album="one]

Beatles - One
Bush - Sixteen Stone

Hope that mess makes some sense...

King - I've delayed turning on the id3v2 tags, but maybe it's time.  I use all of my own genre definitions, such as Rock Blues, Birthday, Halloween, Risque and so on.  Since I'm only using id3v1 tags, I'm at risk because my genres are only stored in the MJ database (of which I have dozens of backups at various stages).  So, if I turn on id3v2 tags, will they get generated for all of my songs?  I have about 1200, nothing like your 14 trillion, but still a fair amount.  I am using MJ7.2.262 - should I wait on the id3v2 tags until after MJ8 is out of beta and I have upgraded?  Thanks in advance (to King and others) for your input.

OK, let's take this a little further.

Why don't you use id3v2 tags?  Because they are at the front of each file?  (Seems stupid to me.  As I've said before, we need a "multi-file", where the "index" points to separate files of data and tags.  I'm sure this data structure will work it's way into standard usage.)

My concern, of course, is that if I turn on id3v2 tags, and somehow get MJ to update all of my files, that my system will then go out and re-write all 1200 files.  ughhh.

Interested in your comments.  (You, after all, suggested Dave consider turning them on.)

yes thats one reason, and each edit requires a re-write of the whole file

id3v1 does not

also id3v2 is hard to understand when programing to write®ead when it could be easyer

>>1200 files
to to much of a problem, but yes every time you wanted to update, you may want to go make dinner\jog©ut the lawn\get a sun tan

Yeah, I think I'll leave them off until the standards committee cleans things up a bit.  Thanks.
