To Doof: How to 'fix' XP...?
« on: February 09, 2002, 06:48:40 pm »

Doof,

You seem like you might know the answer to this:

I liked the 'new' XP login and logoff screens (with user pics and big buttons at logoff).  Well, I installed Novell networking support (IPX/SPX) for some dialup networking stuff and those nice 'new' screens went away (back to the Win2K/NT method).  I want them back...any clue how to?  I've looked every (Control Panel, TweakUI, every property I could check...nothing).

So, can you help a 'brother' out?  LOL

User accounts / Change the way Users log on and off

Make sure the Welcome screen is checked.

Dragyn,

THANKS...but, where is that option?  I'm the Admin (of course), but I only have Change my name, password, Remove password, change my picture, change my account type and setup my account to use a .NET passport.  No 'Welcome screen' option that I can see yet.

It's on the "Pick a Task" page when you first load it up. Don't click on a user name.

Ah, I found it and can't enable because of this stupid error:

Client Services for NetWare has disabled the Welcome screen and Fast User Switching.  To restore these features, you must uninstall Client Services for NetWare.

That blows!!

I don't use Novell at all, but I do know that the same thing happens if you set your machine to log in to an NT Domain. You lose the pretty login screen in favor of the Ctrl-Alt-Del login method for security reasons. It insures that a person sitting down at the machine (which is assumed to need the added security you gain by logging in to a domain) from easily seeing all user names that have logged into the machine in the past, like you'd see with the standard XP login screen, and by pressing Ctrl-Alt-Del before login, it insures that your username and password are passed on ONLY to the OS and not to any keystroke logging utilities that somebody may have installed without your knowledge.

I'm assuming that the same is true for Novell.

Have you looked at:

I do not know if Novell defeats that or not.

I have this image of IQ sitting cross-legged, wringing his hands, because he really wanted to expound on the socio-economic impact of xp-erience.org, but in fact he bit his virtual tongue.

And the image amuses me greatly.

Easily amused, I guess,

Doof is right,
accessing directory services for user accounts (NT domains, Novell Services) disables the nice logon screens made specifically for home users. Business users are serious people and do not need fancy stuff (according to Microsoft). And Microsoft always makes assumptions about users needs, like Home Users don't access NT Domains or Novell Services.

Will this work? Do it before login time. Make/copy your image for XP boot time.
