Too much information needed for registration?
« on: August 07, 2014, 08:00:54 am »

Ok, just out of curiosity why exactly do you need my phone number and the name of the company I work for to purchase MC?
Are they things you NEED and USE, or are you just collecting them 'because we can, it's just something we've always done'
Unless you're 100% sure that there never will/can never be a data breach of your DB's then maybe a rethink of collection policies is in order?

You don't have to put the name of the company that you work for in the registration form, I didn't. I think that's only there if you're purchasing it for commercial use.

It shouldn't be requested then
Overall there's not much information in the privacy policy either
Apparently our user information is protected with a password..... I hope that's not all, that's security from the 'it'll never happen to us' department

See, I'm not trying to be annoying, but as their page says

So, no guarantee of security - that's fair, nothing is 100% and future exploits are unknown
That leaves 'take every precaution' - well one precaution is not to store unneeded information - you can't leak what you don't have

Requested ≠ required.

I typically submit most forms without filling in any information first, to see which fields are actually required, and give companies the minimum required information.

And don't forget to lie outrageously on any fields that you don't want to fill in, but are required to  ;)

I suspect the phone number is a credit card processing requirement.

I know when I once took credit cards online for a while, long ago, I had to ask for phone numbers, and a bunch of other crap I didn't want to make the payment processor happy.
