Hi there. I have a subtitle set-up question

I have JR set to 'show subtitles only if selected subtitle language is different from audio language'. I know this works as I set it up watching 'A good day to die hard'. There is a Russian scene where subtitles are required and it works. However, this does not work for me during a scene in 'Jack Ryan shadow recruit', a similar Russian scene, yet I receive no subtitles.

Is there something I am missing here?

You may need to manually select the correct subtitle stream in some videos.  Does it work if you select the subtitles?

'Select subtitles' Yes this works, but then they are on all the time. Or do you mean something else?

I see what you mean now. Switching the subtitles 'Off' got it working as it should for me.


It's a shame blu rays do not 'mark' forced subtitles. I will have to bear this in mind for future big screen events. But it it cleaver how JR remembers. I am using subtitle settings Null for one film and Off for another which JR sets automatically 'once known'.

Unfortunately Media Center does not let you select forced subtitles from the list.
 
If subtitles are turned off, those hidden/forced tracks should be displayed, but I would prefer that they were shown in the list so you could see if the video even has a hidden/forced subtitle track.
 
 
There are three ways that non-English subtitles can be handled. (assume that the disc is English for these examples)

1. A separate hidden/forced subtitle track which only displays subtitles for non-English dialog.
2. A separate subtitle track in addition to the full English one, which only contains non-English dialog. This is not a hidden/forced track, and must be manually selected.
3. A full English subtitle track with BD-Java(?) options in the menu that will selectively enable/disable subtitles so that only the non-English parts are displayed by default.


Media Center can handle 1 & 2.

With 1, Media Center will show that subtitles are "off" which can be confusing - are subtitles off, or are they "off" and displaying a hidden track?

With 3 it is everything or nothing. Without full BD menu support, Media Center cannot selectively display only the non-English parts of the subtitle track.

No, that's why I think Media Center should display when the hidden/forced tracks are available or in use.

I wandered if/when I would find jRivers achilles heel. Looks like 'for me' I just have. Too much material contains different languages now a days, playing guessing games/stop/rewind/start etc ruins it for me.
