ASS/SSA Subtitles
« on: August 14, 2014, 10:24:53 pm »

Please please please have better support for displaying these subtitles appropriately.
Kind of sucks I have to resort to watching anime with these subs in another player like VLC or MPC.

I know srt format works.

Would this strategy work in the interim?

The basic features of ASS/SSA also work just fine in MC, its the advanced features that don't work, and those cannot be represented with SRT at all.

I don't know if we'll manage to support everything, ASS/SSA is a very complex format.

Hi,
After seeing this thread i made a test.
I have 90GB folder with just test files i collected over the years.
All kinds of containers, codecs, bitrates, QuadHD, UltraHD...
So i tested a "H.264 High@L4.1, 8 ReFrames, FLAC 5.1, 1080p, multi-angle, styled karaoke soft-Subtitle" mkv.
Karaoke subtitles do not work in MC.
I use XySubFilter in MPC with LAV+madVR and there everything works great.
Maybe something like XySubFilter is an option?

You can download the movie i used here: https://imouto.my/watching-h264-videos-using-compute-unified-device-architecture-cuda/#checklist

This is about the only problem i have with jriver, would love to see better support for this.

Also, anyone  else have the problem with subtitles not being 100% center aligned? Often for some reason the text is aligned more to the right then center of the screen for me (this happens on both of the computers i use jriver on).

Maybe something like XySubFilter is an option?

Yeah if it's to hard to get subtitles working correctly maybe it would be possible to make jriver work with xysubfilter? I tried this awhile ago but could never get it to work with jriver..

+1  ;D

For Someone want use DirectVobSub.
1. Install Haali Video Renderer and DirectVobSub (include in K-Lite Codec Pack)
2. Choose Video mode is Advanced - Custom From [Option]->[Video] Then click ...
3. Add Video renderer: Haali Video Renderer
4. Add Video post processor: DirectVobSub

I want to experiment and i have XySubFilter installed and can pick it
in MPC. But in JR it does not show up?

What does the "Start with the following settings" mean?
Is it possible to make the same settings i have in MPC?

Edit
Ok, i added LAV Video/Audio/Splitter like in MPC and find out
i can switch from fullscreen to window and now i see madVR
and LAV in the tray. Also madVR ctrl+j works.
But again, what does the "Start with the following settings" mean?

If somebody can tell me how to get XySubFilter to show up in JR?
If it works in MPC i see no reason that it should not work in JR.

The other thing i don't get is what the DirectShow settings under
file types do. How is that connected to the advanced video settings?
But hey, there i found i can also use my external MPC :)

The "easy" solution for this would be for Media Center to allow users to bypass the internal subtitle renderer.

I don't really have any problems with the internal renderer since I'm only watching my own ripped DVD & Blu-ray discs, but XySubFilter does seem to be quite a bit more advanced.

Perhaps it could even be supported in some official capacity like madVR is?
At least as an option, if not the default.

@6233638, if you maybe don't know:
XySubFilter is a collaboration with madshi (developer of madVR)

I need to play around with MPC as external player. If that works flawless then everything is ok.
Until the JR Player is that ugly as is there is no reason to use it :P
If it would support clearart then i would worry about not having XySubFilter.

But still want to try it. So how to get the filter to show up in the setting :(

You must use only Haali Video Renderer because if use LAV or madVR Video Renderer, JRiver will use own subtitle.
My setting, I create Zone for only ASS/SSA.

But how can i add XySubFilter to the list?
I can not block the JRiver subfilter like i can block filters in MPC?
I thought if i use advanced then the JRiver player does use everything
i have installed on my PC and i add to the list.

As have been said already, the only way to use Vobsub etc. within JRiver is to use another renderer then madVR, and i really like madVR so..
Having the file open in another player via zones etc depending on subtitle format will not work for me as i use JRiver as a pre-processor with convolution.

The "easy" solution for this would be for Media Center to allow users to bypass the internal subtitle renderer.

If it's too much work getting ass/ssa subtitles working correctly a checkbox for disabling jrivers internal renderer would be perfect. I have no clue how madvr/jriver works internally but would this be possible? (If a developer would chime in)

Also the subtitle problems will almost never affect the "normal" subtitles but mostly karaoke subtitles and signs/explanations on places other than the default position. And instead of showing the correct text it will spout out stuff like "10001010010101010101001001010101001010101010101" that can cover half the screen, position text on top of each other etc making it impossible to read or making the text too small to read.

If I don't misunderstand, XySubFilter must use with madVR. So you will not use in JRiver because madVR and LAV in JRiver cause use internal subtitle like I say.

Now use Haali Video Renderer and xy-VSFilter.

May be request JRiver Team help improve Video Mode:advanced-Custom can use LAR or madVR with XySubFilter or xy-VSFilter.
