This is not a new issue - I have been experiencing it for months now, but it only occurs at random, so I had not been able to get a log until now.
Playback of audio/video immediately fails, and doesn't work until MC is restarted.
Once the program is restarted, it works fine again.
 
It is usually after long periods of being idle (e.g. overnight) but will sometimes happen in the middle of a playlist if I happen to stop and then try to resume a few minutes later.

Just happened again - it seems to be a lot more frequent in 163 than previous builds.

it's the same thing here, the only pattern i can see is if it sits idle for a long time.  it's not just playback either, but all operations (tagging, etc.) will hang.  a restart seems to fix it

At the end, you were trying to play a movie:
H:\Video\New\Calvary_t00.mkv

What if you play an MP3 instead?  In other words, is it specific to the video engine?

I can try, but as I said the problem is intermittent.
 
I really need ASIO for playback though, since it is a lot less susceptible to interruption from high CPU usage, and provides a fixed, known, latency for video playback.
 
EDIT: And the WDM device is normally disabled so that nothing else can play audio to the DAC.

Well it just seems like the ASIO driver is in la-la land.  Maybe there's a newer version with some fixes?

I'm running the latest driver, and haven't had this problem in other applications.
Since restarting Media Center fixes it, it doesn't seem likely to be the driver at fault?

Sure it does because restarting forces a reload.  Otherwise it's using the same instance that's in memory.
