AIFF Playback
« on: October 08, 2014, 03:52:13 am »

I can play all files over DLNA with convert or convert if necessary set to output WAV/24/96 but this reduces higher resolution LCPM and SACD files. When I set to 'Original' everything streams as per original resolution except that AIFF files return 'invalid format' on renderer. The same files play with Minimserver so problem is not at renderer end. I have palyed around with all the DLNA settings without luck. Any suggestions?

In my experience AIFF is a most uncommon format for UPnP Renderers to support. I strongly suspect that your MinimServer is actually transcoding your AIFF tracks to L16.

Thanks Andrew. My Chord DSX supports AIFF and the Bubbleupnp CP returns AIFF/16/44 when using Minimserver so not sure if transcoding is occurring or how else to test for it. Squeezebox allowed AIFF to Flac transcoding but MC in DLNA mode is not so transparent.

MC has three delivery modes a) native (not transcoded), b) transcoded to PCM (WAV), or c) transcoded to L16 (another flavor of PCM).

If your MinimServer succeeds in pushing native AIFF files to your Chord, then it should also succeed if MC pushes the same file in native form. After all, it is the exact same file being pushed to the same renderer in both cases. There is no reason why it should fail.

If on the other hand your MinimServer is converting the native AIFF from (say) AIFF/88200/24 down to (say) AIFF/44100/16 then there could be a reason why the one server succeeds and the other fails. What is the format of your AIFF original files?

{ PS I know very well that what Squeezebox did with its transcoding was far less transparent than what happens inside UPnP (read my sig) -- so let us not even start down that road.. }
