Quick Play Ideas - Comments?
« on: February 05, 2002, 11:54:11 am »

Actually this isn't about Quick Play exactly, it's more about the Playing Now menu that's right above Quick Play.

For me... it's all but useless. But not because it's a bad feature. It's a great feature.

It's just that Playing Now, for me, typically consists of about 300 files. And with no easy way of sorting them, trying to find any one file is nearly impossible.

So I was wondering... how about an option to have that menu display in alphabetical order? Just display in that order, not play in that order. And only an option. I wouldn't want to see it set permanently. Or how about a Playing Now under Quick Play that showed alphabetically (or whatever sort option you set for Media Library) and the regular Playing Now menu stays the same?

Personally, if nobody agrees with me, that's fine. It's really a very minor thing. It would just make it easier to find any particular song in a long Playing Now...

Any comments? Better ideas? Next Page

Hi Doof,

Although your idea of displaying tracks in alphabetical order in Playing Now
would ease finding a particular song in the list, it would also remove the ability to check
"what's going to play next" or "what played just before" which, IMHO, is also important.

Let me add just a though about 'Playing Now':
The one thing I find annoying in "Playing Now" is the position of the Reshuffle button.
The addition of such a feature in Quick Play is great. However, I find that when 'Playing Now'
is large (>50 songs) you have to scroll a long way up to Reshuffle.
I'm just wondering wether it would not be better to change its location ?? (same level as play/stop)

Bonne journée à tous

I agree about being able to see what's coming up next. I wouldn't want to replace what we have now, just add on to it somehow.

I'd like to be able to see what's coming up next, but I'd also like to be able to easily find a particular song. I'm just not sure how to do that, hence my post. Next Page

I also agree about the Reshuffle command. I'm not sure if it's possible, but I wonder if they could lock the Reshuffle part of the menu, and then scroll the rest. So that Reshuffle is always at the top of the list.

I would also like to see QuickPlay have another level of menu hierarchy for large libraries. I'd like to see Genre->A->Artist->Album, Genre->B->Artist->Album, etc or some-such, My library is so big that most of the menus scroll, which I find to be a huge pain to work with. Alphabetical stratification would help this.

For your consideration I offer a description of how another player handles the task.

You have an equivalent to Playing Now in view. You hit Ctrl-F (find) a small window pops up. You type in a character string to search for - as in part of the song title or artist name you are looking for. If this string is found on the Playing Now list, the row is highlighted and the small window disappears. If it is not found the small window is replaced with a message like 'String not found'. If you want to re-search the same string, you press F3 and the search and highlight or 'String not found' message is repeated.

The Playing Now order is not rearranged, only the first row found containing your search string is highlighted. From there you can perform whatever function you want with the selection (move, delete, play next, etc.).

If you would like to try out this feature, it is available in the freeware player Apollo at

OK, my previous post might be better put on the Wishlist.  It doesn't help you here.  Maybe this will.

How to locate a track on a very long 'Playing Now' list on MJ8:

On the Playing Now display there are buttons at the top of each column.  If you click on the 'Artist' or 'Name' column heading, the list will sort alphabetically by that field.  You can then find the song you want.  Doing this does NOT change the playback order.  The playback follows the order under 'Seq'.  After you find the song you want, select it.  Click on the column heading button 'Seq' and the list sorts back to the play order and your selection remains highlighted.  Now you can move your selected track to the playback position of your choice.

Yeah, I knew that. What I'm talking about is in Quick Play, like if you're in mini-me or have MJ minimized to the system tray.
