Converting your files from 96 Kb to 128 Kb will not result in a better quality of the audio file. This is because mp3 is not a lossless format. In fact, you will end up with a worse quality file, and therefore it is not advisable to do so.

Every time you convert the file, some bits of information get lost in the process (this is why you can get a smaller file)... and the loss will not be recovered when you try to "upgrade" to 128 Kb... simply because those bits of information are no longer there.

You better go re-ripping your files to the desired quality from the original source. There are lossless formats that will give you an exact replica of your original file.

Hope this will help.
