Can't send PCM to Touch using Whitebear
« on: October 04, 2014, 02:58:12 am »

I have MC20 (paid for) and Whitebear (donated to).

I have MC20 .. Add or Configure DLNA Servers
  Audio:
    Mode: Specified output Format
    Format: PCM 24 bit

When I look at LMS Web control main page it shows a track playing as 2120 kbps, Flc (by Whitebear)

which looks to me like LMS is sending FLAC to the Touch.

If I go to LMS Server Settings filetypes and disable the Flac Native filetype,  my Touch will then say "Unable to play file type .." if I use MC/Whitebear.

But if I play the same file directly from LMS with Flac Native disabled it plays fine.

Seems to me the specified output format/24bit PCM setting is  being overruled in some way by Whitebear. Am I right?

How can I get PCM sent to the Touch using Whitebear and MC?

Edited to add: Just noticed that if I change the sample rate in the Advanced bit of the audio settings, LMS will display a different kbps, though it still says Flc. If however I force the output format to MP3, LMS will show MP3. But FLAC stay as FLAC despite my attempt to send it as PCM.

The Touch cannot handle L16 or L24. Neither can Whitebear handle L24, although it can handle L16 which it converts to Flac for the Touch.

If you want to play native Flac files via MC and Whitebear you either set MC to Never Convert, or set it to Always Convert to L16...

Thanks for your quick reply! So what you're saying is that Whitebear ignores the Mode:Specified Output Format:PCM setting and sends FLAC in any case?

Not quite. The MC settings are not visible outside of that application, so Whitebear does not "ignore" anything. Rather it receives the L16 stream from MC and converts it back to Flac. It is not a very efficient process since MC converts from Flac to L16 and Whitebear converts it back to Flac so that the Touch can play it..

Cheers Andrew. I've put the DLNA Server: Audio settings back to Mode: Original (which in my case is invariably FLAC). There isn't a "Never convert" option. I hope I am right in assuming that Mode:Original will correctly pass 16/44 and 24/96 and 24/192 FLACs to LMS.

I was just fiddling trying to see whether decoding FLAC at the LMS end was better than doing it in the SBT.  Seems like I can only do this if I play directly from LMS. It's not a big deal, I was just exploring.

btw MC20 is still a bit confusing in that even if you select DLNA Settings: Audio: Mode: Original you get a Format: option (shouldn't it be greyed out?)

^

"Original" is the right setting. A previous version called it "never convert"..

I agree with you about your grayed out suggestion.
