Can JRiver read Microsoft .dvr-ms and .wtv files?
What extension (file type) does JRiver use?
Can I view JRiver created files with VLC media player?
Can Microsoft Media Center co-exist with JRiver Media Center?
Microsoft Media Center starts every time Windows starts. OK?

It seems to me that these questions/answers should be in the FAQ area,
and in the user manual.

Check the Wiki

Look for File Types and go from there.

Within MC in standard view => Tools>Options>File Types where you can set default file associations.

Just as an FYI, be aware that there has been experience of difficulties with file type association, https://yabb.jriver.com/interact/index.php?topic=99528.0 as well as my personal experience here => https://yabb.jriver.com/interact/index.php?topic=99206.msg687195#msg687195
