Shockwave (.swf) files require RealPlayer?!
« on: February 18, 2003, 06:53:13 pm »

Why does Media Jukebox require RealPlayer to play .swf files?  These are Macromedia Shockwave files, and only required the Shockwave plugin, which I have installed, before I installed Media Jukebox.  As it is, I'm considering installing RealPlayer if I can either a) find a version that doesn't call home; b) figure out which ports Real tries to use and block them without interrupting my normal service; or c) just find the codecs and put them in a folder where Media Jukebox will recognize them.

System info:  I downloaded Media Jukebox 8 from mediajukebox.com last night, and am running it on Windows 98 SE.  The MJ build number is 8.0.394.

Maybe the *.swf extention is associated with RealPlayer

There's a problem with that theory.  For .swf files to be associated with RealPlayer, I'd have to have RealPlayer installed, but I don't.  .swf files are not naturally associated with anything in Windows 98 (or other versions that I know of)--not even the Shockwave Player, which comes with the plugin.

So the question remains, why does Media Jukebox want me to install RealPlayer before it will play .swf files?

I'd hit the Shockwave site and DL their player. There should be (2) types...the standalone player and the browser plug-in. Try the stand alone version. That MAY fix the associations.
