Synology and JRiver, which library and sorting
« on: October 21, 2014, 01:32:12 pm »

I have JRiver running on an old mac mini (2005) and streaming from a Sinology NAS to a DAC. What is the preferred method for connecting to the NAS?

1. Should I do it through the media server on the NAS? This seems to work but with albums that have multiple discs the sort is wrong, both track ones show, then both track twos, etc. I can't seem to change this.

2. Or should I do it through file sharing and have JRiver create a local library based on the files on the NAS, basically bypassing the NAS server? This also seems to work, and without the sorting issue, but JRIver runs pretty slow and needs to rebuild the library often (I am replacing 256khz files with lossless ones).

Thanks.

I would do it via file sharing. That will allow MC to get the meta data and the files themselves directly, rather than indirectly.

I agree - NAS-based file servers don't seem to have the same tagging capabilities and multi-disk handling as MC. They also struggle with disk image files and media centre files (these appear unpacked in MC but the actual disk file remains packed). Minimserver, for example, won't recognise these files.
I am about to point my PC-based MC at a NAS but what I can't work out is how the data gets from the NAS to my renderer. Does MC send it straight to the renderer from the NAS or does it have to go via my PC?
I am concerned about signal degradation if the data goes all the way over the Ethernet link to my PC and back again.
