How to debug bitstreaming problem - Bug in MC?
« on: January 17, 2015, 03:38:58 am »

<<Moved Thread>>
Is there any way I can see debug output from MC to trace an audio bitstreaming issue I'm having?

I'm trying to stream DTS-HD/TrueHD to my Pioneer SC-LX88 but even though it correctly reporting supports these formats, MC refuses.   I'd like to be able to see why MC thinks the receiver is not capable so I can get this bug fixed - Its a bug somewhere because Windows says its possible and so does the receiver when queried over HDMI.

This problem is driving me nuts because I have to keep switching bitstreaming for DTS on/off to correctly play DTS-ES/DTS-MA - DTS-ES has to be streamed otherwise its not recognised correctly in MC.  For MA7.1 sources I have to switch streaming off to get dtsdecoderdll to process the MA otherwise MC refuses to play the content.   I want *everything* bit streamed so it just works without trying to modify constantly.   So, when MC pops up the message saying playback isn't possible I want to know why.

If I select to bitstream, why can't MC just send the audio data over HDMI irrespective and just warn the user rather than preventing playback?

For information, below are details of whats published by the SC-LX88 according to Monitor Asset Manager (MAM).

Interestingly, using http://www.edidreader.com/ with the raw input block shows that where MAM is stating 16bit its not the case because no bit depth is explicitly stated.   The E-EDID Editor from Deltacast.tv  give an indication of what options can be set for each audio format (Found via this link:  http://openelec.tv/forum/68-audio/65894-fixed-hd-audio-my-guide-to-edid-editing )

Appears that TrueHD is in the E-EDID spec http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Extended_display_identification_data.   In the Deltacast editor this is shown as 'MAT', in the online decode its shown as 'MLP'.

So, can someone give an indication of how to solve this??

Hardware is Plait GTX750Ti, latest drivers, HDMI to SC-LX88.  Tried with WASPI, Direct Sound and various combinations of settings, all to no avail.

Work around - How to debug bitstreaming problem - Appears as bug in MC
« Reply #1 on: January 23, 2015, 06:24:13 am »

The only solution found was to go into Player -> Playback options -> General Video Settings -> Advanced -> Custom -> custom mode settings.

The using Red October HQ as a base, Add... -> Audio Renderer (use disables all audio features)
Add the filter of the HDMI device.

In Audio -> bitstreaming I select HDMI (Not sure if this is actually relevant?)

Now when I play it correctly streams Atmos content, TrueHD, DTS-HD, etc and the receiver fully recognises it.   I have no idea on what difference this is when compared with the bitstreaming

I cant see why this works fine and yet the regular 'bitstreaming' functionality appears to have an EDID bug in it where it doesn't recognise the receiver functionality.   So, this appears to be a bug in MC and not related to the content or the receiver's capability.

Would appreciate a bug fix for this, though I doubt by the lack of response to my request, that this will happen...
