Track No. 32 #2
« on: January 25, 2002, 06:48:38 pm »

After updating all database fields from the tags, track number 32 in the tage results in track number 0 in MediaJukebox. I have deleted the tags and built them from scratch and still the same result. The tags show track no. 32 in v1 and v2 of the tags but as 0 in MediaJukebox.

Look at this posting
http://www.musicex.com/cgi-bin/interact/NeoBoard.pl?Action=ShowPost&Board=inter&Post=7236&BoardIdle=30&SortingBy=0&BoardOrder=Descend&Page=7&UserSession=

The whole problem was already discussed there.
It's not a bug, but programmers is decided that #32 is always #0 at import, don't ask me why!
I already asked in the posting mentioned above to add an option for import, so that #32 will stay #32,
but nothing happened. Perhaps you should try to ask them for something like that again.

'Because Asc Code (Computer Lingo) or $Chr(32) = space" is a pretty lame excuse. Chr(10) returns a linefeed character. Why isn't 10 a problem?

Saprta - I've tried several trying to fix the problem. Dr. Tag, WinAmp, Media Jukebox. By the way, I'm looking for a really good tag writer with the ability to sort and apply changes to groups of files. Any suggestions?

I just tryed it, when leaving the Track # blank Using Helium (http://www.helium2.com/main/overview.asp) I Get No Track #32 I Get "0" as it should be

Dr Tag Has Alot Of Tagging Bugs, And Is Not A Reliable tagger

Update 1:

Using Dr Tag When Entering "0" Or " " (Space) and saving Mj reads it correctly as Track "0"

Update 2:

When Using MJ8, MJ Reads And Writes The Tags (Track #) Correctly

I get no Track "32" info from any tagger that correctly writes Id3v1.1 tags.

Marty

I do have a sugestion for you and that is to delete the mp3 files from the MJ listing (not the files them self), and then reimport the files into MJ to get MJ to see the new changes if not MJ will show the orginal tags (Track# 32 Included).

I Just tested it.

The original Version I used a Id3v1\Id3v2 taging system

Now it is enhanced with Id3v1.1 and Id3v2

and since it correctly tags mp3 files MJ reads it just fine, with no "32" track number

My Little Program (Web Pictures Need Updated)
http://home.nc.rr.com/mycddblookup/index.html

this only happens when you have a Non-Id3v1.1 Compatable tagger.

I also think some of the users problems is that they are not correctly updating the MJ database and they just see the old info and report the same problem

What "Rüdiger from Vienna" And "Marty" Said Is True Even If You Want To Enter A Valid #32 Track MJ Will Always Report "0" not normaly a problem since most cd-roms only have about 12-17 audio files on them anyway.

Because id3 tags never contain a linefeed character in them, that's why. And if "Joe-Bob's MP3 Tag Editor Of The Week" would stick to standards and not use a space to indicate no track number, then nobody would have this problem.

It's not a lame excuse at all. It actually makes more sense.

I've got 1500 mp3's that have a track number of 0. I've got 3 that have a track number of 32. I would much rather fix 3 measly files than 1500, thanks.

Good reference, david.  The standard says:

"If byte 29 of the comments field is character 0, the padding character, meaning that the comments only took up 28 bytes or less of the field, then byte 30 of "Comments" is checked for a non-zero value. If found, this value is interpreted as the CD Track."

So at MJ load time, there are only four possibilities for byte-29/byte-30.
---
Matt, at load time,

when MJ 'sees' 0/0 what does MJ display as track no?
when MJ 'sees' 0/32 what does MJ display as track no?
when MJ 'sees' not-0/0 what does MJ display as track no?
when MJ 'sees' not-0/32 what does MJ display as track no?

Only the second should cause MJ to display the track no. as  32.
The other combinations should display the track number as empty, not defined, space, blank, nyet.

Sparta,
So, I guess it's not a bug, it's a feature.  Also, in one of your replies you mentioned updating the library properly. When files have been added, deleted or changed in the import search path, is there a way to refresh the database without "Update all database fields"? Will MJ selectively deal with added, missing or changed files only?

>So, I guess it's not a bug, it's a feature
I think so

Well what happened is that everyone complained about the "32" track, due to taggers saving in id3v1, and not id3v1.1, and or not correctly using the "0" byte and what they did was padded the comment field with spaces, so "32" would show up in the track field.

what j river did, was what i sugested in a earlyer post was when it imports and it sees a space or "32" it just makes track 32 = "" or basicly "0", it was easy to do, and there is very few cd-roms with 32 tracks.

if you use MJ it will save track 32 if it reads it from a cd-rom, or if you enter it directly it does save it to the mp3, it is just when your importing it will read track32 as "0"

i do not feel its' a bug i think they made it that way to fix another problem, and that is trying to make id3v1 tags compatable with id3v1.1 tags and due to the way many of the taggers work no matter what you do your not going to catch them all.

everyone is basing the fix on a tag that was written to the tag correctly, but if byte 29, and byte 30 of the Id3v1.1 or Id3v1 is not per standards you still make a mistake in reading a wrong track#.

personaly i use id3v1.1 tags, and not id3v2 tags and don't see what the big deal is, i am not going to lose any sleep because 1 of my 2000. cd-roms does not have a track32 (i have 75,000 mp3's) that i can manualy change and enter back in after a import.

I can find better things to do with my time.

>Also, in one of your replies you mentioned updating the library properly.
>>When files have been added, deleted or changed in the import search path,
>>is there a way to refresh the database without "Update all database fields"?
the best way is Update all database fields.

Since i have 75,000 files that takes longer since MJ does not allow me to update by drive (and i told MJ8 would allow this, but as to date they have not done anything about it). so it is easyer for me to delete the files from the listing and reimport.

the problem with that is if it is in a play list or anyother list it will be removed.

>>Will MJ selectively deal with added, missing or changed files only?
To Complex

Update Library: Update New Data Base Fields, Will Get Changes

Missing Files need To Be Imported

Sparta,
What do you know about encoders? At first, when I tried to save a file with the editor to mp3 format, crash. Now, after fooling with the plug-in manager, I get an error that says the Interface version is wrong. I would guess I installed ver 7 plug-ins left over from my upgrade. When I try to download the version for MJ8 at the top of the list, install fails. The error box offers no reason. Any ideas?

By the way, thanks for all your help

One little question: This track#32-feature is a workaround to make id3v1 compatible to id3v1.1, true?

BUT WHY is this problem also there when using only ID3V2?? This new ID3-standard shouldn't have these problems, anyway!

Am I right, or is there an error in my theory?

It Depends On How It Got There In the First Place But You Are Correct

I have not tested a MP3 File Without A Id3v1 Tag, But it may render the same results

ID3v2 Rule

TRCK
The 'Track number/Position in set' frame is a numeric string
containing the order number of the audio-file on its original
recording. This MAY be extended with a "/" character and a numeric
string containing the total number of tracks/elements on the original
  recording. E.g. "4/9".
