After listening to music for a while (varies from minutes to hours), computer (JR  19.0.158/windows 7 64 bit; dual xenon processor @2.4; 8 gig ram) loses sound output.

Even when sound is working, the two dlna modes installed by MC  (generic dlna and audiophile 24-bit dac) keep cycling on and off every few seconds in the Network panel.    When music stops in MC, it also stops in Windows Media Player.  Music can be restored by rebooting computer (but not the DAC - PSAudio Direct Stream Bridge).

When I'm playing movies (using windows media center) or music through Windows Media Center I don't get the problem.

can anyone make sense out of this?

Sounds like a LAN / router problem. What is your setup?

computer: Dell workstation windows 64 bit; dual processor xenon at around 2.4 MHz;  8 gig ram
router: hard wired to Netgear FVS318N 
cables:  router hard wired to PS Audio Direct Stream DAC/Bridge
     all cables are cat 6, maximum length about 10'

How do the PC and the renderer get their IP addresses? Via DHCP? How long is the lease? Did you try setting up fixed IPs on both PC and renderer?

IP address seems to be fixed - it's always the same  - I vaguely remember it has to be a fixed ip address to communicate with a computer at work. 
  DHCP is apparently enabled but I can't tell what, if anything, it's doing.

I can't find a meaningful definition of "renderer". AndrewFG writes "How do the PC and the renderer..." so I infer that the renderer is something other than the PC -  the only candidate i can think of is the PS Audio Direct Stream & Bridge. It communicates with the PC via the router - the IP address is similar to the PC except for the last few digits.

The renderer (Digital Media Renderer) is the player.

I suspect that you problem is due to the PC having a fixed IP address "because of something at work". If that IP address was not assigned by your router (via auto DHCP or DHCP with a reserved address) then it is possible that the router does not consider the PC to be a proper part of your netowrk, and so the UPnP SSDP discovery messages may not be being routed consistently..

(E.g. just one possible example out of many: you may have manually entered an IP address on your PC, but your router has not been informed of that, so it tries to assign that same IP address via DHCP to another network device..)
