MJ8 - Library Management Bug
« on: January 23, 2002, 09:56:14 am »

Hi,
Last week I did some reorganization of my library and used the Move file functionaility to arrange files into Artist / Album directories etc.

This week I notice that three artists appear to have duplicate files in the library but not on the disk.

The artists are "R.E.M.", "E.L.O." and "E.M.F.".

In each case each file is duplicated in the library once with the file location containing the final "." and once without. Both files play fine but they appear in the library twice with two different locations.

See the entries below...

C:\Documents and Settings\jbirkhead\My Documents\My Music\E.L.O.\Strange Magic  The Best Of Electric Light Orchestra [Disc 1]\E.L.O. - Strange Magic  The Best Of Electric Light Orchestra [Disc 1] - 08 - Evil Woman.mp3

and...

C:\Documents and Settings\jbirkhead\My Documents\My Music\E.L.O\Strange Magic  The Best Of Electric Light Orchestra [Disc 1]\E.L.O. - Strange Magic  The Best Of Electric Light Orchestra [Disc 1] - 08 - Evil Woman.mp3

This should easily reproducable.

And they both play?

I don't think they should unless both files actually exist.

Does Windows do something strange with directories like that?

Thanks.

Matt,
Yes, I agree that both should not play because the file names are different but yes, they do play.

I checked Windows Explorer and a DIR in a command prompt window and the directory appears not have the trailing ".".

I originally ripped the files into the same directory structure using MJ 8 (I don't remember what beta).

I will leave the duplicates in place in case you want me to try anything.

Here is my system info...
