Let's talk about Woodstock. How many albums does it have to be?
« on: January 23, 2015, 03:44:43 pm »

Ok, it's a tagging/display issue and I've tried to figure this out on my own but I've reached the limit of my patience, intellect, and technical acumen.

All I want is for my albums to display as albums.  And retain the individual artist's names as artist.  AND do so in a somewhat intelligent fashion.  So, I know that if I go into the Woodstock album and change album artist to "Various Artists" that should group them all together, and it makes sense that I should look under "Various Artists" for that.  But what about albums which are really one artist with other people?  Example: John Prine's "In Spite of Ourselves" which he does a series of Duets.  I want this to be under John Prine, not Various Artists.   It's especially grating if the entire album is a single artist except for one track which may list two, the whole thing gets classified under "Multiple Artists" which is not at all what I want.

I suspect this has been beaten to death but currently I don't know if this is a presentation issue or a tagging issue.  And I sure would appreciate being pointed to the right place to figure that out.

Having said that, I'm now in my fourth week of having dumped Windows Media Player for MC and while the learning curve is steep, I am very pleased with the product indeed.

Thanks

Just change the Album Artist field to John Prine  ;)

The Artist field can be semi-colon delimited, so John Prine; Some Artist; Some Other Artist.

Group albums by Album Artist, but display the Artist field within that grouping.

I think that for a collection of tracks to appear as a single album, they need to have the same Album name, the same Album Artist, the same Year, and the same Disc Number (disc X of Y)..

If you use the online databases for tagging, then inevitably you are going to have to manually change some fields.  It's just part of crowd-sourcing anything.

I don't think they need to have the same disc number. I have my opera as multiple disks and it shows as a single album in category, thumbnail view.

You need to have the same disk number for all tracks on a disk, otherwise in the album track listing you will see all tracks 01 followed by all tracks 02 etc.

Not sure what we are doing differently, but it works fine in my views - lists by disc then by track, whether I display the disc # or not. I have one album that contains 12 discs and it displays in order, by disc and within disc by track. This is in the file display using thumbnail category views. I do not have disc # in my sort. It happens automatically.

OK. I missed the word "otherwise".  You can have multiple disc numbers in a album and the display is correct.
