Mobo with lots of SATA Ports / 10Gb NW?
« on: January 21, 2017, 03:31:43 pm »

currently looking at replacing my i7-3770K (OC) Media Server that has a:
- M1015 SAS Card
- 10GB X520 Network Adapter Card

While I can move these cards to a new Mobo, I was wondering if any of the new KabyLake Mobo's include in built support for either:
- Lots of Sata Ports (12+), and/or
- 10Gb Networking (SFP+ or SR Optics)

Thanks
Nathan

Mainboards with optical 10Gb networking basically don't exist in the consumer space. There are a few with 10GBase-T networking (ie. copper), but thats on a traditional 8P8C connector, not SFP+. (to be precise, there is one for Kaby Lake only, the Biostar Z270GT9, the others are on the X99 platform).

Otherwise, you get 10 SATA ports on some boards, but not 12+. Again, boards with higher amounts of storage exist in the X platform, but not on the mainstream. Not yet, anyway, if anything those often release later.

Incidentally, those two features also exist together, ie. the ASRock X99 WS-E/10G has 12 SATA ports and a 10GBase-T network adapter (Intel X540) - that said, the X99 platform is pretty old by now, and is due for a refresh later this year with Skylake-X.

Mmmm tempting to find a second hand Xeon with this board.... but it will add up, plus as you say, it is old.

Plus copper 10Gb is not exactly what I want but I do have a Unifi US‑16‑XG and this has 4 x 10Gb-T ports that I've lent out....(but I may have to pull new Ethernet cable and I already have Fibre in place).

Another similar X99 option is the Asus X99 E 10G.   But only 10 Sata.
