I have some question about MC use on my mac.
« on: January 26, 2015, 06:11:36 am »

Hello

Could you spare me a few minutes to answer my questions? I hope for understanding  :)

1. How it possible to Wake-ON-LAN from shutdown mode (not sleep)? I have same possibility on Windows 7 machine, but it not work on Mac mini.

2. Is it possible that JRiver Center blocks sleep/hibernate mode?

3. I set autostart server in MC settings but it not work. It working only if I add MC to autostart through MacOS group settings.

4. I have many wave files without tags and pictures. Do I need to re-encode these files to another format? But I consider that wave files more compatible format for all devices.

5. What audio settings can really improve the sound? I mean buffers and pre-buffers, memory playback, upsampling or integer mode? It may be necessary to disable any services in MacOS or JRiver? Do you have clear guide for this?

6. Is it possible to restart/shutdown Mac (not media server) through JRemote ?

7. Is it possible to do that the path to my library folder will be always opened on the left navigation panel in a folder view.

8. I disabled all DSP processing settings and trying to playback 16bit file but I see that audio output always sets 24Bit. Is the output mode should not be
bit-perfect?

9. I have problem with mouse cursor while watching the video. It is not hidden.

10. Is it possible to use playback buttons on locked screen on my iOS devices?

11. Do you have plan to create offline multi-language manual?

I can answer some of these, but you would probably get better answers if you asked fewer questions at a time.

1. You can not wake a mac if shut down, only if sleeping.
2. I believe MC will prevent sleep only if something is playing in one of the zones, including DLNA streaming.
6. You can shutdown/restart but I believe sleep/hibernate is not working.
10. Yes, but only if you are streaming to the device (Local playback).

3. This works on my Macbook and Mac Mini.  Which OSX version are you running?
4. WAV files should work fine.  We add meta-data tags to them as needed.
5. Default settings will deliver top quality sound.  I wouldn't recommend changing buffer settings unless you're trying to solve a problem with drop-outs in the audio.  I also don't recommend memory playback, upsampling, integer mode, or disabling services.
7. If you mean, can you start Media Center with the "Audio" item in the left-hand tree expanded, you can do that by setting it as the startup view.  Tools / Options / Startup / Startup Interface / Location / Last Location.
8.  Are you using Integer Mode?  I believe in integer mode it will always show 24 bit as that is what Core Audio integer mode uses.  Otherwise Core Audio uses 32 bit floats.  Since your input is 16 bit, your output will be bit-perfect in either mode.

Thank to all for your reply .

3.  OS is Mavericks 10.9.5,  mini md387, nad m51, WD NAS with media library through ethernet.

4. How I can drop all audio setting to default?
Why integer and memory playback modes are not recommend? Could you please explain it with more details, because many audiophiles are using these parameters and are very happy with it. :) Competitors also uses these options on their players.

That can you say about dither and exclusive mode needs to be enable or disable?

8. Yes, I'm use enabled dither, memory playback, integer and exclusive modes. I'm not understand why on the screen I see 32bit or 24bit? Is it upsampling in case of 16bit file playback? Wich bit depth recieve my DAC? My DAC also processed in 35bit depth.

I gave you my personal recommendation, others may differ.  I've listened carefully on good headphones with a good DAC and had someone else randomly switch from one setting to the other and could not reliably identify which was which. I would urge you to try the same test - have someone play a particular section of music 20 times, 10 times with each setting, randomly switching between them, and see if you can guess correctly which was which.  If it turns out you can correctly identify one setting that you prefer over the other (in other words, correctly identify your favored setting significantly more than 50% of the time), then stick with that setting.  The reason for our defaults:
a. Memory playback makes the playback chain more complicated (needlessly in my opinion).
b. Integer mode is somewhat "legacy" on Mac.  Apple dropped it in favor of 32 bit floating point, then re-instated it because of user complaints.

I mostly use exclusive mode as well.
There's no need to disable dither.
Core audio takes 32 bit floats or (in integer mode) 24 bit integers, that's why you see those values.  No upsampling occurs, upsampling refers to changing the sampling rate, not the bit depth.
I think your DAC is probably 32 bit rather than 35 bit? :)

Ah, it does handle 35 bits to provide headroom when using DSP on the DAC.

In this case I have 2 postproccessing steps with bit depth (Core Audio and NAD processing) Am I right? Is it good for sound?

Have two more questions.  ::)

1. After restart I have that JRiver always starts with Media Server. I set JR option "Starts only Media Server" but JR started with Media Server.
This option was worked a few days ago.
Could you please help me with configure start with Media Server only?

2. I see the message with error if I try to view video. I can close this warning and and playback continues.

Thanks

There shouldn't be any post-processing of the audio data, unless you've enabled some kind of DSP on the DAC.  I'll try to reproduce the Media Server problem.  What error are you seeing on video playback?  Maybe you could send us the problem file and we'll test here (Dropbox or something like that).

Sorry for the delay.  Could you try the new build just posted (20.0.67) and see if it's still happening?  There were several changes within the video engine. Thanks.

Item #1 is on our bug list to fix.  However, with item #3 I'm not sure what you're referring to.  When I play the youtube video, it's very jerky, does this represent the problem you are seeing in Media Center?

Can you send us a video that is displaying the behavior so we can do some testing here?  Something like Dropbox would work for sending the video.  Thanks.
