Can no longer play DSD through Marantz usb dac
« on: March 22, 2015, 10:25:06 pm »

Previous version of jriver played DSD including double rate. This version playes neither and results in "unsupported" being displayed on the Marantz. What changed in version 20 that disabled the DSD playback? Perhaps there is a setting in jriver that would revert it back to the previous version type of processing.

Hello Cupboy,

Have you set up the Bitstreaming to DSD, or have you changed any output settings?

If DSD files had worked in the previous version, they should work in the version 20 as well.

Good luck.

It's at Tools > Option > Audio > Settings > Bitstreaming. Please set it to DSD and try it.

Also, set the Output Encoding at DSP Studio (Tools > Option > Audio >... DSP & output format ... > Output Format) to None and change the sample rates of 352,800Hz and above to 192,000 Hz since Marantz HD-DAC1 supports up to 192 kHz PCM.

By setting the bitstream option to DSD, you will not be able to control the volume of DSD files from JRiver MC, but you will be able to listen to PCM files at PCM format and DSD at DSD format this way. As you may know, PCM and DSD are different ways of sampling sound, so it's better listening them in their own formats.

That results in a lengthy error message the contents of which can't be copied and pasted so I will type it all here. This will take a while...

"Playback Problem"
Details
Playback could not be started on the output 'Core Audio' using the format 'DoP 2.8Mhz 2ch'.
This output format may not be supported by your hardware. You can use DSP Studio to change the output to a compatible format.
Also make sure that your system has a valid sound play back device and that it is properly configured in playback options.

Now JRiver will not play anything at all. I can't seem to change it back to working for FLAC files now either.

update: Rebooted the Macbook and now am playing DSD 2.8.

Marantz DACs support DoP, so the error shouldn't have happened, but it did, so please check below:

Do you have any other media player open, like Amarra, Audirvana, and etc.? If you do, please close it because they will try to use your audio device to itself only.

Secondly, have you changed any other settings at output device? If you have, I would like to suggest you to start from default setting, of course, the audio device should be set to the Marantz DAC, but anything setting related to the DAC should start from the default setting. Check whether Integer mode is on or not as well.

Also, you are using USB port to contact to the DAC, right? Please check whether the cable is connected properly.

Good luck!

That's what I was going to suggest next. :D It's good to hear the problem has been solved. Enjoy! :)
