JRiver MC20 and iTunes m4p files - No audio
« on: March 23, 2015, 04:43:31 am »

I have recently upgraded (at cost) from MC19 to latest Windows MC20.  All seemed OK until came across some .m4p files purchased with iTunes.  They appear to play but there is no audio.  The same files play OK in: iTunes.  Any ideas ?   I have several hundred of them.  ?

In MC's options for File Types, how is m4p being played?  Using QuickTime should always work.

M4P files are DRM-locked files which will only play in iTunes/QuickTime.
If you have QuickTime installed, Media Center should be able to play those files via the QuickTime engine.

However, if you delete those files (or perhaps move them to another location) and download them from iTunes again, you may find that they send you higher quality M4A files instead, since iTunes no longer DRM-locks the files they sell.
Though this only seems to apply to some albums. Some albums seem to be DRM-locked forever, but most should now be distributed as M4A files if you redownload them.

Thanks to both replies.  I was not using Quicktime player, so I changed to that as suggested.  The sound of silence was not golden !.
I resorted to going back into iTunes and seeing if I could re-download the files.   It appears that several of the pre-2009 albums are no longer available.
Most of the ones I liked have not been published in DRM free formats.  My resolution was:
1) List all of the m4p files and their locations
2) In iTunes:  Create a playlist of the albums with m4p files
3)  Burn the playlist to CD
4)  Import the CD back into iTunes with Apple Lossless Audio format
5)  Overwrite the old m4p files.
The problem being, not all music is in full album  format.
That required a more manual intensive method with a separate playlist for singles and re-type in the music info when importing back.
On looking closer at the forum,  I now see a lot more queries around m4p files.
There are music format changing apps, but the good ones ask you to pay.
I am a lot happier now. Resolution is only another 4-5 CD's away!!

I tried all the tricks including the suggestion to declare Quicktime Engine to play m4p files, but -- no cigar -- still can not hear the m4p files. I have both iTunes and Apple Quicktime Player installed. I do not want to have to burn CDs if at all possible. Any suggestions?
