Performance: what should I increase?
« on: March 27, 2015, 01:56:36 pm »

Want to get better performance for things like conversion and normalizing. Should I add processing or RAM, or both. My current server is an Acer Aspire

Processor: pentium 2.41 GHz
RAM: 4 GB
OS: Windows 8

Library: 18,000 songs, 1 TB

For conversion and analysis tasks, faster processor, more cores, then set the concurrent tasks (where possible in MC) = number of CPU cores.

If you can afford a 1TB SSD, then that would - I think - make the most improvement.

However, the person who would know best is ....   glynor .

An SSD is always the best bang for the buck if you want to make improvements.  Spinning disks are fine for the media library.  Do not boot to them, and do not load applications off of them.  Period.

After that, maybe CPU.  But that description of the current build isn't detailed enough to answer intelligently.  The "pentium" could be anything from an ancient Pentium 4 flamethrower (in which case the whole system needs to die in a fire) or it could be a modern "stripped down" Ivy Bridge, in which case it is probably fine.
