I just got a 4k TV, and am looking at getting a nVidia GTX960 (link below)...will it work for 4k upscaling using MadVR?  Most of my content is 1080p but I do compress a lot of recorded TV to 480p for archiving, and occasionally go back and watch it.  I am not one that will notice subtle differences in quality, but I am also aware that running the HTPC at 4k, and playing back 1080 movies, I will probably lose the hardware upscaling of the TV I just bought, so I am hopeful that this card will work...

A timely thread... I've held off buying a vid card until a 4k TV which is likely around August, but being the type of person I am means I am starting to look at potential options now so I'll be watching this one!!

The 960 will be fine upscaling to 4K using "normal" scaling algorithms, like Jinc. It won't be able to use NNEDI3 for 1080 -> 4K though, but for that you would need a true high-end card.
If you want to be safe, wait for one of the 960 models with 4GB of memory, which can help on greater resolutions, or even the 960 Ti, which should be released sometime soon.

I am currently using an 9 year old 50" 720p display. I have been delaying the purchase of a new tv for quite some time, and am now close to pulling the trigger on one (when it is available), a Vizio M70D3, which is a 4K display.

I am using onboard graphics in my HTPC and have had no reason to consider adding a GPU for any advanced MadVR. But if I have a 4K display, I am curious about the quality of upscaling found in today's TV's vs that of NNEDI3. Most of my content is 1080p.

Can anyone elaborate on the benefit of upscaling 1080->4K with MadVR / NNEDI3  instead of letting the display do it? I have heard that Vizio's "UHD Spacial Scaling Engine" is good. But how good?

It is hard to say without comparing both visually. However, I've found the benefit of madVR to be more apparent on large projection sized screens (126"+) rather than the relatively smaller TV's.

I use madvr on a 65" 4k TV. Honestly the benefit for 1080p content isn't huge, and you likely won't notice it if you're not looking for it. The benefit for 480p content can be night and day difference, depending on the quality of the source. I have a 980Ti because I use my HTPC for gaming as well, but at the moment I'm not maxing out the madvr algorithms that the card is capable of running.
