MC 20 No Longer Records TV Programs
« on: March 31, 2015, 02:12:10 am »

Since 2/15/2015, MC 20 stopped recording TV programs.  Viewing live TV works just fine.

It's at the current level of 20.0.87.  Attached is the current log file.

Is this a known problem?

No problem here.
Check the status of your Tuner (Tools>Options>Television>Advanced>Status). Make sure it is "available" (idle). I assume you tried to manually record something (and are not just relying on a scheduled recording).

Thank you for the reply.  The status page shows both tuners are idle.

I did try to manually record a few times last night and found no files produced.  Interestingly, when I watch a program, a new directory was created for time shifting under the recording path.  But as soon as the watch was stopped, the directory was deleted.

For future reference, it's generally best to post TV related issues over in the TV Cards and TV area. You maximise your chances of it being seen by the people best qualified to help.

Over there you'll find this thread -
How to send MC logs related to TV to developers
I'd recommend that you follow that advice and post your findings.

For what it's worth, I've got 2 SD HDHR units and they haven't given me problems. You might want to make sure your firmware is up to date, your firewall has an exception working for the HDHR kit and it also never hurts to run a repair from HDHR Setup > Advanced just for good measure.

There was a problem with a previous build where it failed to download the Guide information.

Once you have 87 (which fixes that problem), make sure that your tuner device is available as suggested in previous posts in this thread, and then run setup again.   That will do a manual fetch of the Guide information and then it should do it automatically from then on.

The very short log file you attached only shows that MC checked periodically for scheduled recording actions, and apparently found nothing to act upon.

Is Enable Recording checkbox accidentally unchecked?

Thank you for the reply.  I will check the MC setting tonight and report back.

This system had MC 19 installed and was recording TV shows flawlessly.  Upgrading to MC 20 was pretty straightforward and the TV recording continued.  One day when upgrading to an interim version of MC 20 build, everything was broken.  The library was restored from a previous backup and everything was fine again.

One day I realized the TV recording stopped after 2/15/2015 and the TV channel listing showed nothing.  I reconfigured the TV tuners and download the new guide information.  I was able to watch live programs without issues so I paid no attention.  Last night I saw the latest recording was still 2/15/2015 even though it was schedule to record shows daily.  Very strange.  A working system just quit after an unfortunate update.

Were the recordings that you missed one-time recordings or subscriptions?  Did you check that the recording rules are still present?

No recordings were created, on-demand or on subscription schedule.

You hit the nail on the head.  It was the unchecked Enable Recording check box!  Why do we need it?  Was it new in recent MC 20 builds?  I am not sure I had to do anything to enable the TV recording other than to define rules.

May I submit an enhancement request?  If any recording is to be made, manually or automatically, enable the recording implicitly.  If that box is unchecked with rules in place, warn the user.  Better yet, get rid of that box and/or place a visible Enable recording button on next to the record button, please.

It seems superfluous to have this box situated away from the recording settings.  I would not want my Dish Hopper to have this setting buried in the System Menu with recording schedules set, especially when one is creating new schedules or hitting the recording button.

" If that box is unchecked with rules in place, warn the user. "

That's the only suggestion I would agree with.

The difference between a Dish DVR and MC20 is that a Dish DVR only does Television.  MC20 does so many other things.

I use the "Enable Recording" checkbox because in some cases I have setup recording on one PC only to end up preferring to use a different PC.  So all I had to do was uncheck the box.  If the other PC did not work out, I could go back and recheck the checkbox.

But I agree with adding warnings - to prevent the problem that you had.

Just had a crash
« Reply #10 on: April 01, 2015, 12:00:03 am »

After enabling the recording, I left the computer.  When I returned a few hours later, I saw a message saying that MC 20 had crashed.  I restarted it, enabled logging and hit the Report problem... button.  The recording seemed to complete fine.

Attached is the zip file it created.

Yes, the version that caused those issues was 78.

You need to enable logging, and leave it on, so it will log events that happen.  Enabling it after the crash already occurred does not help.  The log file in this package is actually the same file you had attached previously.  The good news is that your package does include a crash dump file that may help me diagnose the crash.

Thank you.  The logging was left on after the zip file was generated.

The MC does not crash often so it might be a while before it does.  If it does again, I'll update the zip file.  I am hoping the crash dump file might have some info.
