CD ripping/playback problems in recent builds

Ripping Still Doesn't work.  I haven't been able to rip since about .129.  HOw are things going on the new drive access layer and when will I get to start ripping again?  Actually, I can rip from my laptop, but not from my main music server.  Details of my (non-ripping) server machine are below.  Any work-arounds?

Quote

I cannot access my disc drives in this build either. All the same errors as before.
MC correctly shows the cd in 'My Computer' and 'cd,dvd, handhelds' in the tree, just can't actually do anything with the files. I've tried everything I can think of to get this working, and failed.
[Q] Would the fact that my plexwriter is running PI/0 mode and the DVD in DMA mode2 have any bearing on this? (plextor master, DVD slave) The plextor doesn't officially support DMA, but there is a "jumper hack" that can be used to force the issue.

Please send me an email and I'll send you a diagnostic version of the ripper control that may assist in debugging.

Thanks,
John T.

Well, I just installed .137 and the problem is still there:(

Here's a little bit of wierdness for ya though...
I took the tick out of "use digital playback"....
Double clicked on one of the cda tracks listed in playing now, and it played, no visualisation, obviously, but here's the wierd bit......

MC is closed atm, but the CD is still playing!!!!!!!!!!!

I may have found the fix, but I'm not sure. I have emailed a new cdripper file to all of you that emailed me. Please let me know if it helps. It will also be in the next build.

Thanks!

Hi John,

Thanks for the quick reply.

Tried the new cdripper and was able to rip :)
but there is a strange behaviour :
When ripping the "status: initializing" phase takes a very unusual long time, someting like 30 secs before actual ripping starts.

Note that does not solve the cd playback problem.

If you need any more info please tell me.

Cmagic-

Is your drive SCSI? I find that my scsi drive takes about 3 to 5 seconds to initialize, whereas my IDE drives take about 1 second. 30 seconds is definitely bad. I'll look to see where the bottleneck might be and send you a ripper control with diagnostics. Does it take 30 seconds every time?

I'll get CD playback updated for the next build.

Confirmed. The e-mailed .ocx is ripping OK here too. After reading your post, Cmagic, I nipped back and checked mine. I've got one drive set to large buffer and one to digital secure and "initialisation" takes btween 3 or 4 seconds for each. Both on the same ide channel, using MC's internal mp3 encoder.

Nice work there John. Thank you.

a little update,

I tried to rip with my other drive ( a Sony burner) and it went ok, itinializing took 1 sec.
The other one (DVD) still has a long intializing time when ripping. Both drives are on the same IDE cable and are set for 'Digital large buffer' at Max speed.
The master (port0) is my DVD drive (long init), the slave (port1) is the burner (rips ok).

Sorry John, it appears to broken again.

Well, just a little bit. I tried playing/ripping an enhanced cd (Dido's 'No Angel'). MC correctly identifies the audio tracks; right click the disc in the tree and select update from database and MC flickers once, very very fast, and the only visible change is "Folder" column inserted to the left of the sequence column.
Trying to play one of cda files gives the "hang with buffering" bug, and trying to rip the cd gives the "failed to extract digital audio. Try next track?" error.

For standard cd's though, there appears to be no problems. Thanks for that.
Might be just me, but it seems like MC is spinning the drive faster with this build? mp3 ripping speeds are up which is nice, but what's not so nice is that I can hear it spinning and it's spoiling any music it's playing. I'm certain I've never noticed this before, and I've not made any system changes, except for losing a HD, so before I start digging for more clues, is this down to changes in MC?

Hi John,

Just tried MC9.0139 (with new cdripper) on my laptop and I'm not able to playback / rip CD. Will try later to send you a log file with cdripper.ocx you sent me.

CDROM/Burner is drive E:

Also note that the burner is not detected (TEAC CD-W224E). Laptop is a Dell Latitude C840.

Have a nice day,

Christian

Cmagic-
You don't need to reload the cdripper file I sent you via email, build 139 has the same one. Logging is probably still enabled unless you edited the registry setting. Just try doing a rip, then exit MC and send me the cdripper.log file (check the date to see if it's current).

Thanks!

Does it do the same thing with other enhanced CD's? Just want to rule out a damaged Dido CD causing the problem.

Hi John. Apologies for the lag, been wrestling with lost HD's this week. Not a nice experience.

Here's the latest....
The Dido cd in question has no visible .cda files when viewed from My Computer externally, though MC shows the 12 tracks. Windows media player 8.0 can both play and rip the tracks, (MC can play the ripped tracks) and the cd works as it should in the HiFi.

When viewed in windows explorer, the file & folder list looks like so...

Borrowed a DJ Sammy cd single off one of the kids and it behaves the same way.

When viewed in windows explorer, no cda, just autorun.inf, djsammy.exe and video.mpg on the root, no other folders.

John,

Seeing similar problem here...

MC burns fine on Yamaha F1 Ext USB...however, it will not RIP nor play Audio CD's (playback on data CD's is fine, though) from it. I get the error "Read track failed. Failed to......". If a track is selected to play it "stops" immediately. If I insist then status bar reads "bufffering", but nothing happens. I had turned off "enable Digital CD playback...." on the W2k system (under drive properties), but it had no effect on problem. MC is set for Digital playback (either drive).

Here's my specs:

There is logging capability in MC for the ripping process if you set a particular registry entry:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\JRiver\Media Jukebox\CD Reader\Logger

Change the value from zero (0) to one (1). Then restart MC and try to rip a track. Then exit MC and email me the log file which will be in the MC directory and will be called "cdripper.log".
This may help narrow down where the problem lies.

Still can't get this done using MC v.144

I ripped to non-drm .wma's using wmp 8 (xp-sp1 default). MC can play these files (referring to wma bug mentioned by someone else around here somewhere).

I used MC to convert these to "insane" .mpc's and all went well.

Not a showstopper as I don't have many of these cd's, still, would be nice if it worked though.
