Even more interesting, after purging the PPA and going back to stock Mesa MC's fonts work fine now. Maybe it's something only a clean MC install would fix? Very strange indeed and I might not be the only person who experienced this.

I don't really understand how a clean install of MC would fix it.
Maybe just select a different font then back to the default?
There does seem to be some magic however in how the xfonts-75dpi are integrated into a running system.
