Best ripping (lossless?) format for both PC and iOS?
« on: January 04, 2015, 08:46:07 am »

Hi.
My record collection is mainly ripped in mp3 format, but the last few years I have occasionally used FLAC (recommended size). However, for the sake of convenience, I would like to be able to play these files on iOS devices. I would also like to avoid creating duplicates, so reformatting FLAC to some other format - playable on both PC and iOS - seems to be the way to go. So what should I choose?

Thanks in advance,
Ole K

Apple lossless seems like the choice for you.

ALAC is the obvious choice a) because the files are smaller, and b) because of standardised tagging support. But (for completeness) in my experience AIFF and WAV will also play both on Apple devices and on MC; however a) the files are larger, and b) even though these formats do legally allow extra "boxes" like ID3v2 tags, this can cause glitches on players whose developers did not read the specifications properly..

I was going to point you to the Wiki but it doesn't cover ALAC:
http://wiki.jriver.com/index.php/Encoding_Settings

Maybe that can be put on the improvement list, along with a link to the DSD entry:
http://wiki.jriver.com/index.php/DSD_Format

.. just suggesting ..  8)

Thanks. I believe Wiki was the page I browsed through, and that is why I didn't think of ALAC in the first place. And yes, perhaps that page should be updated to include ALAC.

Great! :) ALAC ripping in Windows/MC causes playback problems on my iPad/JRemote, but I'll figure it out in another thread. Glad to see ALAC in the Wiki, though!
