Are the libraries cross platform?
« on: May 06, 2015, 05:42:45 pm »

Hello,

I have a NAS which can be accessed by both Windows 8.1 and Apple Mac.

I would like to be able to have one library that I can open and modify with both Windows and Mac. Obviously not at the same time.

I looked through many threads and couldn't find an answer.

Thanks,
Jeff

I'm not sure if they are cross platform or not.  But I know that this kind of thing is generally a bad idea.  Not the idea of wanting to share configurations.  But rather trying to do it through the program's built in database.  JRiver recommends that you put the library on your fastest internal disk, SSD if possible.  See here for reference.

It is absolutely possible to Back Up your library from one system, save it to the NAS, and then Restore the library on another system from that Backup file.  The big deal here is the file paths.  They need to be identical on both systems, which is kinda hard to do between windows and Mac.  I haven't tried it, but I'm certain you can find some info on it.

I think maybe Glynor does some version of this, but I'm not 100% sure.

Best of luck to you.

Brian.

The library will open fine but the filename will be all wrong on the other platform.  The filenames aren't stored in a platform independent way and there's no converter.  It's something we're thinking about, but no progress for a while.

Just a thought - can Macs use UNC paths?

MariaDB, with migration tool?  And/or application server (aka library server)?
