I set up several libraries:
One (Default) remains empty
the next (APE), I imported ONLY ape files,
the third (MP3) I imported ONLY mp3 files.

the results: when I open the mp3 library I have the lag,
the ape and default libraries are lag-free   ;D

now the problem, how do I find which of the well-over 12,000 mp3 files are the root of this evil ??

Import one half (or 1/4), test, then the other(s).

Keep repeating until you find the "bad" file.

I didn't receive your email.  Maybe your sendmail doesn't like big attachements.

Can you try again with the smallest library that still exhibits the lag?

Also, is there anything abnormal about your library?  Very long comments, files on network drives, too much music by Banarama, etc?

Note that the lag may be based on the sheer size of the library if you have a bad / failing disk that it's being saved to.  Maybe try moving the library to another hard drive.

Thanks.

Bananarama?? How dare you!! LOL
I do have a large collection of Grateful Dead, but broken down by album & concert date.

I have two drives, a WD200gb and a Maxtor 200gb, both ATA133. I normally use one as my media library and the other for backup (removable drive bay).  When I had problems wqith the WD200 I swapped these and
problem still existed even with these drives swapped.
Also the WD200 has just been replaced under warranty (windows delay write failure) and even the new drive shows the same lag.
Position on the IDE controller makes no difference either.

The problem is that your database is huge and saving it requires a ton of disk I/O.

Give us a few days to work on this and then we'll know more.

Thanks for all your help!

Ok the new build does show a notify mesage when MC9 is saving.

===========================

just wondering if there is another way where when MC9 is loaded a small program is loaded along with MC9 to do nothing but to connect to the database for not only MC9 but for media server.

when someting needs updated it sends this info to this program and it does the maint on the library saving or what ever.

just an idea

Since some builds (I believe from 259 on) MC freezes a slight moment every 4 or 5 seconds. That goes for all actions I perform, like scrolling down menus, playlists, etc. as well as for visualizations for instance. There is no freezing in playback of musicfiles however. I tried to download an earlyer build to get rid of the problem, but the downloadlinks of those files don't work anymore.

Matt,

The "updating database' at intervals like you have done has made a large difference.  The lag is gone as far as I can tell, even when I open a library with all my files.
Looks like you have a handle on it.
Thank you.   :)

I just bumped in this thread and I recognize almost everything in it.
With me I think it started when I imported a whole lot of bios throught King's plugin.
Since then my backup-zip is about 22 Mb big (for 12,000 MP3's).

Might that be the cause of this annoying freezing?

If yes: I don't quite understand Matt's solution of reimporting bit by bit. Could you clearify (English?) that a bit?

Thanks in advance.

Actually, it was Jim who suggested re-importing the files a few at a time in search of "Bad files" . . .  sometimes there can be a corrupt file which possibly can cause problems.

Matt had checked out my library backup and found that all that data from bios and lyrics had a real potential for this type of behavior as it made the database very large and slowed it down.

As a result of Matt's findings, if you update to the latest version of MC9.1 they have changed the way the database saves and this has helped. I do not know for sure what other improvements they will make to resolve this.

If you do not wish to update to the Beta version then I think your options are either to split up your files into smaller libraries or eliminate some date (bios or lyrics).

Today JohnT gave me the solution for my freeze problem:
"Please go into Tools/Options/Device Settings and set all "Action to perform..." choices to "Nothing" and uncheck "Ask every time". Then restart MC and see if you still experience the same freezes."
