Problem: R2 NTSC DVDs incorrect color using madVR
« on: October 19, 2014, 07:00:55 am »

When playing Region 2 DVDs (Japan) with madVR the source colour is incorrectly interpreted as SMPTE C resulting in a "pastel" (pale) picture.

Japanese DVDs (at least those manufactured before 2011) use NTSC (1953), but there is no option for that in the keyboard shortcuts section. All the options provided are "modern" (although there is a huge catalogue of titles published prior to 2011!).

Is there any way to resolve this problem?

Thats probably because Japanese NTSC is "special". US NTSC switched to SMTPE C primaries and whitepoint in the 80s, while Japan stuck to the original NTSC colors from 1953, and I don't think madVR has any options for those.

Your best chance is to talk to the author of madVR over at the Doom9 forum however.

While waiting for posting privileges on the madVR forum due to a bizarre and useless forum policy (sigh)...

I recently demonstrated this problem to someone else who was quite shocked because they assumed the problem would be subtle (as the profiles supplied by madVR are all very similar standards and none are wide gamut).

For future reference, I am adding some screen captures to show how far the mark is being missed when playing Region 2 NTSC DVDs with JRiver Media Center (and other media players). I expect the problem is even worse for R1, as, from all appearances, the US distributers for Japanese titles are not converting profiles as expected, but merely re-encoding unconverted video with the US profile (although no player could be expected to cope with that). I suspect many users are just assuming that old anime titles look faded because they are "old"!

(These screen captures are understated, due to conversion to sRGB for web display).

Incorrectly displayed as SMPTE-C in JRiver Media Center (on an sRGB monitor the result actually has lower colour saturation than it would have had if no colour management was applied)...

What it should look like when correctly displayed...

You can specify that content is NTSC 1953 content with the filename tag: [primaries=470M]
To automate this, use the Rename, Move, & Copy tool with the filename expression:

Code: [Select]
Delimit(Filename(,0),/ /[primaries=470M/],)
You can save this as a preset in the lower left.
Unfortunately there is no direct access to this in madVR by using either the input primaries toggle, or a direct keyboard shortcut.

Wow. This is clunky. And this means the majority of Japanese DVDs have to be ripped and saved to specially named files before playback. Hope someone fixes this down the track.
