Is it possible to use VST plugins with JRiver on RPI?
« on: June 18, 2015, 05:59:59 am »

If so which type of plugins? (most have a windows and Mac versions).
I'm specifically interested in tpdf dither in JRiver.

Any ideas are welcome,
Thank you.

No VST exists that's been compiled for ARM.

You could possibly play with brutefir to apply a tpdf dither and use JACK to route the audio I/O. (or possibly ALSA with a virtual sound card setup)  It would be fairly complex to setup though... if it works at all....

Thanks Mate,
this does look complicated...

How can we make a suggestion to the MC development team?
The volume control with JRiver is already the best, if it could support pdf dither it would be even more awesome!

Thanks,

You can suggest whatever you like but I recommend reading http://yabb.jriver.com/interact/index.php?topic=76912.0 first :)

Thanks for the link, I hadn't read that one.

Without wanting to open another can of works, which I think Bob Katz has well closed....

The short story is, the 24 bit dither in MC20 is close enough to perfect that it's not worth faffing around with third party dithering. 16bit can be improved slightly, but I'm not sure most people would notice.

62, probably best if you try to bite your tongue! :) :) :)

JRiver has used TPDF dither since 2010.

Quote from: Matt
In a coming build:
NEW: Added ability to dither output when outputting 8-bit or 16-bit data (selectable in DSP Studio > Output Format > Bitdepth).

We're using a TPDF dither.  It sounds noticeably better at 8-bit.

Here is a thread about how to support Windows VST's in Linux:  Windows VST on Linux, FINALY!

Thanks Mate,
I saw that very long and detail thread with bob Katz about TPDF Dither - though that happened in 2013 - so how was JRiver supporting it since 2010?

To the best of my understanding it's still not doing 'proper TPDF Dither' - or perhaps that was fixed over the last 2 years?
Also, does the Raspberry pi has exactly the same dither and volume as the windows and mac versions? Obviously there's no ASIO on RPI??

Thank you,

There is AFAIK no Asio on Linux at all...

If you look at the beginning of the thread in 2013, Matt said, "If you look in DSP Studio > Output Format > Bitdepth, you'll see that we offer dithering at 16-bit and 8-bit. Currently we do not offer dithering at 24-bit." Since 2010 JRiver provided TPDF dither for  8 and 16 bit output and then added dither for 24 and 32 bit output in 2013.

Output mode such as ASIO has nothing to do with dither.

Thanks Mate,
Where would I find these settings in the current Linux/RPI software?

Thanks you
