I had always understood that it was, but I understand from Bruno of ncore, now ki audio fame, that

First of all the Kii THREE can easily be used as an active speaker, connected to your existing preamplifier via the analog input on both speakers.

On the digital side a lot of the great music streamers have an internal (dithered) Volume Control and can simply be connected to the Three via a single AES or SPDIF cable. A great combination we have tried with the Kii Three is for example the wonderful Weiss MAN301.

For all computer audiophiles out there life is also very simple. All you need is an USB to AES/SPDIF Interface, connected inbetween your Mac/PC and the Kii Three. Today´s music player software like Audirvana, Foobar or PureMusic has perfectly dithered volume control built in."
