Music stutters when ereaders attached to pc
« on: August 22, 2015, 02:34:15 pm »

It's an odd problem; music repeatedly stutters or rebuffers whenever I attach an ereader via USB.

Music is on a drobo external drive. Video is on another external drive. Both are USB2. This happens for multiple ereaders (Kobo, Kindle, Nook, for multiple models of each). It does not happen when I attach other USB devices (memory cards, phones). It does not happen when playing music from an internal drive. Video (again on an external drive) playback is also unaffected.

It happens with AV (Webroot) both on and off. It happens with Calibre (ebook management software) running and not running. It does not happen if I'm connected wirelessly to Calibre. Audio settings in JRiver seem to have no effect.

It's happened on two computers. My new one is no slouch hardware wise and it seems the new hardware makes some sort of difference, buffering or skipping is at a minimum, not much worse than a vinyl skip. It was much worse on my old PC with buffering sometimes taking up to 5 minutes to begin playback. When I was still running the old PC I thought it might be a drobo issue as booting with the drobo attached took forever (up to a half hour). The drobo doesn't seem to effect my new machines boot time.

Drobo software says my device is healthy. Windows throws up no problem messages when attaching an ereader.

I notice no issues when MC is not running.

It happens for both MC 20 & 21.

Does anyone have any suggestions? I realize it most likely isn't a MC issue but any suggestions for what to try next would be much appreciated.

Try having MC read the entire song in one go and let it play from memory.
Tools - Options - Audio - "Play files from memory"
