MC20 for Mac dropped my license again, what am I doing wrong?
« on: September 05, 2015, 06:47:48 pm »

For the second time MC 20 for Mac has dropped my license and told me that my Trial Period has expired.  This time in the middle of ripping a CD.  I tried restoring with my purchase code, but that didn't work.  I was successful in getting MC20 running again by extending my trial period.  That will only work for a while, though, then I'll be right back here.

Assuming the license had every been successfully applied, the most common reasons this could happen are:

* Changing your Mac's name in System Preferences > Sharing
* The clock being inaccurate
* Filesystem permissions issues

For the latter, you can run Applications/Utilities/Disk Utility.app and repair permissions on your boot volume.  Then re-apply the license.

Make sure when you run the MJR file they send you that it opens with the correct copy of Package Manager. This is probably the most common issue, if MC is launching and installing the license, but it is MC20's version of Package Manager that is loading, and not MC21's, so MC21 never gets the license.

@Glynor:  He's running MC20, not 21.

@Mac:  I've had difficulty with registration before myself.  A good workaround is this:

1.  Launch MC20.  You should see a button that says something like "Restore License".  Click it.
2.  Go find your registration code.  The one that was emailed to you when you purchased MC20.  Not the one that came with an MJR file.  The main registration (license) code.
3.  Type that code into the box that appeared after you clicked the Restore button.
4.  You should be licensed properly.  This will use up one restore, but no big deal.  If you get too low, you can get them reset, assuming you have legitimate reasons (which most people do).

Good Luck.

Brian,

I tried that and it didn't work.  Now that I've shut the computer down, I'll try it again to see if it works after restarting.

Gloynor,

Thanks for the ideas.  I haven't even opened System Preferences, so if the computer's name has been changed, gremlins did it.  I have no idea about your other two suggestions, but will poke around to see.  This is my first Mac, so it will be a learning experience.

I wonder, would this happen if MC was being run from the DMG file and not from Applications?

Macdonjlh:  Have you installed MC by dragging it to the Applications folder?  Or are you running it straight from the DMG you downloaded?  If you haven't already, please drag it to the Applications folder.  Then close the DMG and eject it.  Then run it from Applications.  You might have to re-license it once more *if* this was the problem.  I'm just guessing here.

Good guess, Brian. That'd certainly do it.

Time to confess: I'm a new Mac user, so some of this is new to me.

I found a MediaCenter21 Mac-298294.mjr file in my Downloads folder, which I dragged to the Applications folder.  Then I opened the .mjr file with Package Installer.  I was told my license was successfully installed.  Then I restarted the Mac Mini.  Then I went to the Finder and clicked on the Media Center 20 icon (seems to me it should be a Media Center 21 icon).  A pop-up told me there was a problem with the update, I clicked "retry" and agreed to the MediaCenter 200126 terms.  Then I got another pop-up with a MC20 icon and an Applications folder icon.  Double clicking on the MC20 icon started MC20.  According to the "About Media Center" under Help, I have build 20-0-0126.  I'm pretty sure I had the latest update (132?) at one time.

Please say you dragged Media Center 20 into the Applications folder before starting it? If not, that's why you're having issues - for best results the Media Center 20 app needs to be in the Applications folder (by dragging it into the Applications folder) and not ran as a standalone app. And it isn't necessary to have the .mjr file in the Applications folder either - just starting the .mjr file using PackageInstaller should be enough to register MC.

Awesome Donkey,

Thanks for the reply.  Yes, I dragged, then started.  But I dragged the .mjr file over.  Since that's not the file to drag to Applications, which one is?  MediaCenter 200132.dmg?  MediaCenter 200132.exe?

The Media Center 20.app file inside the .dmg file when you open it - it'll show Media Center 20 along with the Applications folder. Just drag Media Center 21 into the Applications folder then open the Applications folder and start Media Center 20 from there.

OK, so drag the .dmg file, then open with Package Installer?

Ok, let's back up and start at step Zero.

0.  Do you have a license for MC20 or MC21?  All recent (last 2 or 3 months) licenses work with both.
1.  If you have a license that's good for MC21, you should go get MC21 from the top of the MC21 forum:

http://yabb.jriver.com/interact/index.php?board=45.0

Otherwise, download the latest MC20 from the top of this forum.  That should be 20.0.132.

2.  When you download MC20 or MC21, you'll get a .DMG file.  DMGs are kind of like a CDROM.  They are a container that has files inside the container.  With a CDROM, you put it in your CD drive and you get to see the files inside.  With a DMG file, you double click it and OS X mounts this container as if it were a CDROM and opens it up for you to see the files.

When the DMG opens, you'll see an icon for MC, and an icon for the Applications folder.  You might have to make the window bigger to see all of both icons.

3.  Here's where you actually "install" MC.  Drag the icon for MC over the top of the Applications folder until you get a green + sign, then let go.  It will copy over to the Applications folder and show you a little progress bar.
4.  Time to license it:  Try running the MJR file again.  It might not work, as your situation is pretty unusual.  If it doesn't, MC will launch and say it's expired.  If so, go to Alternate Licensing below.  If it worked, you should be able to do Help > Registration Info and see that it is correctly licensed.

Alternate Licensing:  If running the MJR file doesn't work properly ,MC will probably open a dialog that says it is expired.  When that happens there will be a button that says "restore license".  Click that button and you'll get a dialog box asking for your license key.  That's the original key that was sent to you when you purchased MC.  Go find that in your email.  Highlight it and copy it.  Then paste it into this dialog box.  Then press OK and it should license your copy of MC correctly.  Verify with Help > Registration info.

Good luck!

Brian,

According to MC I have a MC21 license.  So I downloaded the latest MC21.  I double clicked the icon in my Downloads folder, which opened a pop-up that had an MC icon and an Applications icon, like you said.  I dragged the MC icon over the Applications icon and let the Mac do its thing.  When I double clicked the .mjr file it said that I am properly licensed.

I went to the Launch Pad and double clicked on MC21 and it started.  It reloaded my library, which surprised me, but it seems to have worked.

Thank you for the Apple tutorial.  It's a bit different than a PC.  What should I do with the MC20 files?

The MC20 DMGs?  You can trash them, or keep them. Doesn't really matter since you're running MC21.

You said it "reloaded" your library.  Does that mean it started you fresh with nothing?  Or it picked up the Library you had previously created?

If you need help with importing or otherwise fixing up your Library, we'll help you out.  Though it would be best to start a new thread about that.

I'm glad MC21 is working for you!  To be super duper sure, you should check Help > Registration Info and make sure it's properly licensed to you and not sitting in a Trial mode.
