Title: How do I move my music library to external drive
Post by: johnkaess on February 06, 2018, 07:09:29 am
Running on an iMac and beginning to get tight on hard drive space. I'd like to buy an external hard drive and move all my music to the external drive. How do i let MC 23 know about the new location while still keeping all my data about the music library (playlists, ratings, last played, genre, etc.) I have almost 17,000 music files, so i'm looking for a way that does not require having MC re-find each song.

The wiki has a topic called Moving Files.

Tools, Library Tools, Rename, Move & Copy Files.

Update database to point to new location (no file rename, move or copy)

Copy your media to a new folder on your new HDD.

Find What: xxx

Replace With: xxx

B17NNS,

I followed step by step. Media Center showed the correct file location for all files in the file tags. However, none of the files would play, every one showing an error message that the file could not be located.

I ended up having to delete all the file information from Media Center and then re-importing the files. Fortunately, Media Center saved all the file and tag info including ratings, all except the last played date.

Strange. Worked for me recently when I moved from a USB HDD to a NAS. Glad you're sorted though.
